Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Oleg Petrov (ranked 6313 p4p, 0 weight class) and Johnny Sams (ranked 9372 p4p, 719 weight class). Petrov's entrance music is Metallica - Hero of the Day. A fine choice. Oleg Petrov has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Oleg Petrov!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Johnny Sams!
The judges for this bout are Ivan Kurochkin, Aleksandr Martynov and Vladimir Khabensky.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sams moves in looking to clinch but Petrov pushes him off.
It looked like Petrov was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.
Sams tries to clinch up.

Petrov closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Sams to the mat! Sams manages to get full guard.
Petrov looking to sit in guard and control but Sams gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.


Petrov looking for subs off his back but Sams has passed one foot through into half guard.

Sams stands up from half guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Petrov throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Sams's waist but Sams gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Petrov off to one side.
Sams throws a counter combo.

Sams rushes Petrov and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Petrov tries to circle away but Sams has him pinned against the cage.
Petrov wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Sams tightens his grip and picks Petrov up, before dumping him to the ground. Petrov manages to land in guard.

Sams gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Sams throws a series of punches but Petrov avoids them all with ease.
Sams wants to clinch.
Sams keeps Petrov at a distance using the push kick.

Petrov throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Sams tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Petrov is in Sams's guard.
Sams is pulling down on Petrov's head. It's preventing any offense from Petrov, at least for the moment.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Sams avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.

Sams has Petrov pulled in close to control his posture.
Petrov's corner is telling him to maintain position.

Petrov got a little sloppy there for a moment and Sams has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Petrov has managed to get both his arms back between Sams's legs - danger averted.

Sams looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Sams is trying to keep Petrov in close.
Sams is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Petrov wants to control from the top but Sams keeps moving.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Petrov stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Sams swivels though and keeps the full guard.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Petrov scores to the head and body with a nice combination!
Johnny Sams seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Sams plants his feet and lands a nice head kick!
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Petrov is defended easily by Sams.

Petrov drives through and clinches with Sams against the cage.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Sams breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Sams fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Petrov, pushing him back against the cage.
Petrov throws a nice elbow but it doesn't land.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Johnny Sams dominated that round.

The fighters circling - Sams throws out the jab but it was never going to land.

Sams fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Petrov, pushing him back against the cage.
Petrov lands a hook that snaps the head of Sams backwards.

Petrov looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.
Sams tries a knee to the head but Petrov blocks it.
Sams tries for a takedown but Petrov manages to get underhooks.

Sams has Petrov pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Petrov manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.
Oleg Petrov has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Johnny Sams.

Petrov is trying to push Sams away but Sams has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.

Sams escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Sams has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Petrov closes this distance looking for a takedown but Sams circles away.
Oleg Petrov is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Sams takes the fight into the clinch.

Sams goes for a takedown in the clinch but Petrov prevents it.

Petrov is looking to work some ground and pound but Sams has wrist control.

Petrov decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Sams, up you get!

Petrov shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Sams is trying to defend but Petrov finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Sams wants to stand back up but Petrov manages to pass into side control.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Petrov is looking to take a break and control but Sams is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Sams manages to get back to half guard.
Petrov looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.

Sams is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Sams is refusing to be controlled, as Petrov sits in half guard.
Sams throws a strike from the bottom but Petrov passes into side control!
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Petrov is looking to take a break and control but Sams is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Johnny Sams will probably get the nod - 10:9.
That's time! Petrov's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!



Petrov scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.

Sams sneaks out the side door and pushes Petrov away - he's back to his feet. The crowd show their appreciation for the escape.

Petrov feints and as Sams raises his hands in defense, Petrov changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Sams manages to escape and get back to his feet.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Petrov throws a wild combination but nothing lands.

Petrov shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Sams punching from the bottom.
Sams tries to roll over but Petrov keeps him under control.
Petrov perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Sams wants to get back to full guard but Petrov has passed into side control.

Petrov decides to stand back up.

Sams moves into the clinch successfully.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Sams blocks a body shot from Petrov.

Sams pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Petrov tries for a takedown but Sams sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Sams tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Petrov manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Petrov shoots in looking for a takedown but Sams manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Petrov's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

Petrov drives through with a takedown into Sams's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
Sams is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Sams gets to his feet - back to striking we go!

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Johnny Sams seems to be working more effectively in the clinch in the fight so far.

Sams breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Petrov darts in looking for a takedown but Sams gets double underhooks and turns Petrov into the cage.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Oleg Petrov. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Petrov tries to keep at a distance but Sams has taken the fight into the clinch.
Sams prevents Petrov from breaking the clinch.
Sams lands a knee to the head.

Petrov escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Sams lands an elbow inside that Petrov shrugs off.
Sams just leaning against Petrov, taking a breather.

Sams gets control of Petrov's arms and successfully pulls guard. Sams will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.

Petrov trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Oleg Petrov has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

This has been an exciting period of action!

Sams closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Petrov throws a punch but it's blocked by Sams.
Sams is trying to pull guard but Petrov has him pressed against the cage.
Johnny Sams is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Petrov using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Sams has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.

And that's the end of the fight!
Johnny Sams comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Sams has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
