PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Big John (ranked 25585 p4p, 0 weight class) and Gabriel Bengala (ranked 6508 p4p, 0 weight class). Gabriel Bengala told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Big John!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Gabriel Bengala!
The judges for this bout are Sandra Marshall, Santiago Holmes and Winston Alpacca.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Bengala fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. John sprawls well initially but Bengala persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Let's hope that Bengala has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
Bengala winds up and cracks John with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Well, if Bengala is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Bengala drops an elbow to the side of John's head.
Bengala slows the pace down in half guard.
John definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight.
John throws a strike from the bottom that misses.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Bengala scores with a couple of good hammerfists.

It looks like Bengala might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
John looks for a takedown but Bengala sprawls well.
Bengala stuffs the takedown.
Bengala circles away from the clinch attempt.
John is breathing heavily.
Bengala misses with an uppercut. John saw that one coming.
Bengala stuffs the takedown attempt from John. John gets slowly back to his feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Big John. That's going to take a lot out of him.

John throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Bengala's waist but Bengala gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing John off to one side.
Bengala missing with a left hand there. John was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Bengala keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
A jab lands there for Bengala.
Bengala lands a right hook to the body.
A combination from Bengala does no damage.
John half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range.

Bengala shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in John's guard.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Bengala keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of John's head.
John can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Bengala controls the pace.
Bengala should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Gabriel Bengala dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!

Bengala is taking a breather. John says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

Bengala lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.

Bengala looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.

Gabriel Bengala has got the better of the ground game so far.

John is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Bengala scores with a couple of nice shots.

Bengala content to control rather than advance.

Bengala in half guard on the top. He's looking for a kimura... He's got it locked and he's managed to free his trapped foot. John tries to escape but it's on too tight and he has to tap! Great BJJ skills there from Bengala!
