PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Ari Ahikaroa (ranked 7569 p4p, 665 weight class) and John Franco (ranked 22395 p4p, 806 weight class). I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Ari Ahikaroa!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, John Franco!
The judges for this bout are Mauricio Rocha, Leandro Rodrigues and Edson Gomes.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Ahikaroa thows a leg kick but Franco checks it

and Franco counters with a single leg into guard. Ahikaroa didn't expect that.

Franco decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Ahikaroa, up you get!

Franco looking to score a takedown here. Ahikaroa is defending well but Franco drives through and ends up in Ahikaroa's guard.

Franco gets to his feet - Ahikaroa follows without any prompting.
Franco has been spending a lot of time sparring his boxing in the run up to the fight, trying to sharpen up those hands and look for a knockout.
Ahikaroa tries for a takedown but Franco circles away easily

and Franco counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Ahikaroa wants to get back to his feet but Franco passes into half guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Ahikaroa is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Franco perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Ahikaroa is looking to escape.

Franco takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Franco passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Ahikaroa!
Ahikaroa tries to control Franco's body but Franco pushes him off. Ahikaroa squirms to his side and now Franco has his back!
You can see the frustration on Ahikaroa's face… He knows he is in trouble unless he improves his position sooner rather than later.

Franco has good solid back control here.
Franco is throwing strikes from the back here. Oh that last one was to the back of the head. Franco gets a warning from the referee. He throws another strike to the back of the head straight away though and the referee has seen enough. He breaks up the two fighters and stands them back up. Franco gets a real talking to here and is lucky not to get a point deducted. Franco apologises and we restart here on the feet.

A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Ahikaroa.
Franco shoots in looking for a takedown but Ahikaroa manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Franco's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Ari Ahikaroa. That's going to take a lot out of him.

and Franco counters with a nice double leg into side control. Ahikaroa won't be happy with that.

Ahikaroa on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Ahikaroa tries to get out of the position.
Franco remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.
It looks like Franco might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Franco fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Franco shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Ahikaroa defends it nicely.
Ahikaroa shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Franco as he jumps to the side.
Franco moves out of range as Ahikaroa throws a body kick.
Franco is looking to slow Ahikaroa down with leg kicks.
Franco has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

A telegraphed takedown attempt from Franco is defended easily by Ahikaroa.

Ahikaroa tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Franco swivels and escapes.

and Ahikaroa counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.

Franco has hold of one of Ahikaroa's legs. Ahikaroa is fighting the takedown attempt but Franco gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Franco not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

John Franco showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Ahikaroa darts in looking for a takedown but Franco gets double underhooks and turns Ahikaroa into the cage.
Ahikaroa sets himself, and Franco steps forward looking for the clinch! Ahikaroa avoids it this time.

Franco drives through with a takedown into Ahikaroa's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.

Ahikaroa takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better.

Franco decides to stand up, so the ref orders Ahikaroa to his feet.
Franco changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Ahikaroa tries to avoid it but Franco manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Ahikaroa to the ground. Ahikaroa escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Ahikaroa is looking for a counter combo.

Ahikaroa wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.

Ahikaroa lands a nice leg kick that just misses Franco's sensitive parts.

Franco has clasped his hands together around Ahikaroa's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done.

Ahikaroa wants to get back to his feet.

A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.
Franco works to advance to full mount. Ahikaroa defends for a few seconds but eventually he succumbs.

Franco tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

Franco is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Ahikaroa can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.

Franco with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.

John Franco is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

John Franco comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Franco has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
