PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Gregory Simmons (ranked 5435 p4p, 246 weight class) and Kirk Sims (ranked 25306 p4p, 383 weight class). On his way into the cage it seems that Gregory Simmons has been attacked by a crazed fan! It looks like it might have been the just bleed guy! Luckily Gregory Simmons seems to be OK! I thought that lunatic was in prison!?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Gregory Simmons!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Kirk Sims!
The judges for this bout are Felipe Paraventi, Leandro Rodrigues and Matheus Silva.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sims shoots in and drives through. Simmons sprawls well.
Simmons keeps Sims at a distance using the push kick.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Sims enables Simmons to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Sims manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Sims escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Simmons gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Simmons is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Sims had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Simmons defends it easily.
Sims not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Simmons sitting in guard here, content to control.
Simmons advances to half guard.
Sims wants to get back to his feet.
Sims has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Simmons is working away from the top position though.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Simmons content to control rather than advance.
Sims wants to control but Simmons is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Sims is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Simmons pulls his head out easily.
Simmons is controlling the pace.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Sims gets caught napping as Simmons dives in and scores a takedown. Sims manages to retain guard.

Sims wriggles free and stands up.

Simmons instigates a clinch.
Simmons looking to throw knees to the head but Sims is blocking nicely.
Simmons stalling against the cage.
Sims is trying to drag Simmons to the mat but Simmons just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.

Sims is fighting off a takedown attempt but Simmons is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Sims to the mat. Sims regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.
Simmons knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Sims on the ground.

Sims looking for a guillotine here but Simmons defends easily.
Simmons has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Sims has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Simmons can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Horrible takedown attempt by Simmons or perhaps it was just good defense by Sims, which made it look bad.
Simmons looks to throw the jab but Sims is out of range.
Sims tries to counter by closing the distance.
Sims shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Simmons defends it nicely.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Simmons on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Sims. Sims obviously looking to wear him down.
Sims shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Simmons sprawls well. Simmons wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Sims gets slowly back to his feet.

Simmons will no doubt start fighting again in a minute but for now he's just having a little rest, leaning Sims up against the cage.

Simmons will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.

Sims stands up from mount. Strange move.
Sims falls off balance throwing a combination

and Simmons counters with a single leg into guard. Sims didn't expect that.
Simmons trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Simmons slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Simmons accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Simmons tries to stand but Sims is controlling from the bottom.

Simmons with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
Sims has momentary wrist control but Simmons slips an elbow through the middle.

Simmons postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Sims is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Simmons, into his guard.

Simmons is looking to sweep but instead, Sims has passed into half guard.

Simmons on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Simmons tries to get out of the position.

Sims is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Simmons is just riding it out for now. Sims eventually gives up the hold.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Simmons is controlling Sims's trapped leg to prevent Sims from advancing to side control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Kirk Sims will probably get the nod - 10:9.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!


The fight stays on the outside here - Sims looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Simmons drops down looking for a counter takedown but Sims sprawls and moves away.
Simmons swats away the attempt to clinch by Sims.

Simmons closes the distance and pushes Sims back into the cage.
Simmons tries to land a knee to the head but Sims blocks with his arms.
Sims has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Simmons avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.

Simmons manages to break the clinch.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
A looping hook to the body misses from Simmons. Sims does a little dance to reset his feet.
Sims raises up his leg as if looking to counter with a high kick.

Simmons keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.

Simmons pulls guard effortlessly.
Sims wants to control from the top but Simmons keeps moving.

Simmons is pulling down on Sims's head. It's preventing any offense from Sims, at least for the moment.

Simmons is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Simmons utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Sims postures up in Simmons's guard and throws a big left but Simmons blocks it.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Come on Simmons - let's have some action - none of this stalling nonsense.
Sims is looking to break free of the clinch but Simmons has double underhooks.

Simmons breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Sims throws a quick head kick that skims the top of Simmons's head.
Simmons thumps Sims with a low kick.
Sims is looking to clinch but Simmons is avoiding it.
Sims tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Simmons paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Simmons is looking for a counter combo.

Simmons fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Sims sprawls well initially but Simmons persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Sims wants to control but Simmons is keeping busy.

Well Simmons has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
