PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Jeff Goldstien (ranked 6400 p4p, 0 weight class) and Thomas Miocic (ranked 6257 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Jeff Goldstien!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Thomas Miocic!
The judges for this bout are Michael Johnstone, Santiago Holmes and Bart Greer.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Miocic tries to clinch but Goldstien is having none of it.
Miocic misses with an uppercut. Goldstien saw that one coming.
Goldstien half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range.
Miocic stuffs the takedown attempt from Goldstien. Goldstien gets slowly back to his feet.

Goldstien fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Miocic sprawls well initially but Goldstien persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Miocic is trying to escape back to his feet but Goldstien uses the scramble to pass into side control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Miocic prevents Goldstien from improving position.

Goldstien stands up and we're back to a striking position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Miocic misses with a head kick.

Goldstien shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Miocic as he jumps to the side.

Despite the aggression on Miocic's face he doesn't fully commit to the counter.

Goldstien bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Miocic is trying to escape the position but Goldstien is controlling the position.
Goldstien's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Goldstien stands up and beckons Miocic to his feet.

Miocic looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.

and Goldstien counters with a nice uppercut.
Miocic tries to score with an inside leg kick but telegraphs it and Goldstien is able to avoid easily.
Miocic tries to bum rush Goldstien with a series of wild strikes but Goldstien uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

Goldstien moves into the clinch.
Miocic is trying to break the clinch but Goldstien is controlling him.
Goldstien keeps control of Miocic as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.

Goldstien has Miocic pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Goldstien pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Miocic tumbling to the mat - Goldstien dives into Miocic's guard.
Goldstien stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Miocic swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Miocic really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Goldstien. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Miocic is looking to stand back up but Goldstien counters by passing into half guard. Oops... bit sloppy there by Miocic.

Miocic is looking to escape.
Goldstien controlling the action here.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Thomas Miocic will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Miocic tries to clinch but Goldstien moves out of range.
Goldstien changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Miocic tries to avoid it but Goldstien manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Miocic to the ground. Miocic escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Goldstien swats away the attempt to clinch by Miocic.
A clash of legs there as Goldstien blocks the low kick.
Miocic misses with a jab, cross combination.
Goldstien dives in for a single leg takedown but Miocic sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.

Goldstien shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Miocic manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Miocic is looking to stand back up but Goldstien counters by passing into half guard. Oops... bit sloppy there by Miocic.

Goldstien is taking a breather. Miocic says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Goldstien takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

Goldstien wants to work for an arm triangle but Miocic is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Goldstien throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Goldstien thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

Miocic tries to kick Goldstien off but Goldstien keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!

Goldstien throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Miocic tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Goldstien is in Miocic's guard.

Goldstien avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Goldstien slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Miocic has a closed guard, preventing Goldstien from standing up.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Miocic lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. Good work there by Miocic.

Goldstien lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Miocic circles away quickly and effectively.
A nice side step and Miocic releases a counter shot to the body, but it doesn't find it's home.
