PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Peter Szczawinski (ranked 4112 p4p, 380 weight class) and Zach Assad (ranked 7542 p4p, 518 weight class). I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Peter Szczawinski!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Zach Assad!
The judges for this bout are Paul Gruel, Ryoma Takatsuka and Chris Saunders.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Szczawinski shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Assad avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Szczawinski.
Assad is trying to maintain the position but Szczawinski is very close to passing his half guard.
Szczawinski has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Szczawinski is looking for a kimura but Assad is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Szczawinski to get the leverage.
Assad tries to roll over but Szczawinski keeps him under control.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Assad is looking to control Szczawinski's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Assad avoid being mounted?

That's one minute gone in the round.
Assad is looking to improve his position.
Assad blocking the ground and pound attempt from Szczawinski.
Szczawinski is thwarting Assad's attempts to control the position.
Assad tries to roll over but Szczawinski keeps him under control.
Assad wants to get back to full guard but Szczawinski has mounted him!
Assad suckers Szczawinski into throwing a sloppy strike and uses the momentum to reverse the position beautifully! Assad is now in Szczawinski's guard!

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Assad throwing strikes from guard but Szczawinski blocks nicely.
Szczawinski keeping moving, preventing Assad from controlling successfully.
Assad throws an elbow that misses. Szczawinski uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Assad's guard. Nice move by Szczawinski!

Assad looking to hit a scissor sweep but Szczawinski is one step ahead there.
Assad is trying to control the position but Szczawinski postures up.
Szczawinski with a flurry of punches that miss.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Szczawinski scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
Assad trying to control the position.
Szczawinski distracts Assad with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
Assad is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Assad looking for a sweep. Not yet Assad, not yet.
Szczawinski really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Assad is trying to keep Szczawinski in close.
Szczawinski is looking to work some ground and pound but Assad has wrist control.
Szczawinski looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Assad is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Assad throws a sloppy head kick and Szczawinski moves out of range easily.
Assad scores with a decent looking hook.
Assad lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook.
Assad looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.
Assad swings wildly with a hook that is half blocked by Szczawinski.


Szczawinski is rocked!

Szczawinski pushes Assad up against the cage in a clinch.
Oh Szczawinski is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
An uppercut on the inside fails to land for Assad.
Szczawinski drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Assad gets the underhooks and prevents it.
Szczawinski is breathing heavily.
Assad misses with the head strike.
Assad lands with a quick shot inside that doesn't really do much damage.
Assad is trying to slow down the pace of the fight but Szczawinski is keeping busy.
Assad lands a left hand that snaps the head of Szczawinski backwards.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Zach Assad will probably get the nod.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


A jab lands there for Assad.
BOOM! Assad lands a beautiful left hook that drops Szczawinski. Szczawinski tries to recover but Assad is having none of it, landing more punishing shots from mount. One final crushing shot and Szczawinski lies motionless on the canvas. The fight is over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:09 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Zach Assad!
Peter Szczawinski was interviewed post fight and said 'Good Fight!'.
