PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Aaron McGinnis (ranked 394 p4p, 43 weight class) and John Nordquist (ranked 241 p4p, 20 weight class). McGinnis comes to the cage accompanied by Star.One - Original Badman Feat. Takura & Assassin. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 12 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Aaron McGinnis!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, John Nordquist!
The judges for this bout are Yves DeLean, Elvis Blanc and Steve Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nordquist lets loose with a powerful body kick. McGinnis will feel that in the morning.
Nordquist takes a shot to the body in his stride.
We've been informed that Nordquist has been sparring a lot of Muay Thai in the buildup to this fight so let's see if that has an impact on the result.
Nordquist throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and McGinnis counters with a stiff right hand.


It looks like John Nordquist has been cut.
Nordquist attempts a leg kick but it's missed by a good margin.
McGinnis digs a good body shot into Nordquist's ribs.
Nordquist throws a body kick that misses
and McGinnis counters with a straight right hand.

Nordquist changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. McGinnis looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
McGinnis is looking for a sweep.

Nordquist lands a few punches from side control.
Nordquist in side control, trying to ground and pound but not landing this time.
Nordquist working the strikes but McGinnis uses the opportunity to regain half guard.
McGinnis keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Nordquist lands with a punch from half guard.
McGinnis is not content to let Nordquist control the position.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Nordquist lands a nice short elbow.

That's one minute gone in the round.
McGinnis is controlling Nordquist's position as best he can from this difficult position.
Nordquist drops an elbow to the side of McGinnis's head.
Nordquist missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
Nordquist is nestled in close to McGinnis, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

Nordquist is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Nordquist throws a strike but McGinnis avoids it easily and moves to full guard.
Nordquist stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. McGinnis swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Nordquist looking to sit in guard and control but McGinnis gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Nordquist wants to sweep here but McGinnis controlling him for the moment.
McGinnis has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
McGinnis controlling from the top position.
McGinnis passes Nordquist's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Nordquist has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Nordquist is trying to control but McGinnis manages to pass to mount!
Nordquist is looking to improve his position but McGinnis isn't that keen on the idea.
McGinnis content just to control the position here.
Nordquist wants to control but McGinnis is having none of it.

Nordquist can't escape the position.
McGinnis avoids the attempt from Nordquist to control.
McGinnis tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Nordquist tries to hold on but McGinnis postures up.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Nordquist tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Nordquist just holding on.
Nordquist is in all sorts of trouble here.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Aaron McGinnis will probably get the nod.
The cut man is working on John Nordquist's cut.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Nordquist ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
McGinnis misses with an uppercut. Nordquist saw that one coming.
McGinnis keeping at a good range here, avoiding a leg kick.
McGinnis looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
McGinnis takes one on the button.
McGinnis buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.
McGinnis throws a nice inside leg kick.
Nordquist uses good head movement to avoid the hook from McGinnis.
McGinnis checks a low kick. Bone on bone - not my idea of a good time.
A punch lands to the side of Nordquist 's head but he takes it in his stride.
John Nordquist seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
McGinnis ducks down and throws a hook to the body.
Nordquist uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before McGinnis has time to react.
McGinnis scores with a straight right hand, right through his opponent's guard.
Nordquist misses with a body punch
and McGinnis counters with a straight right hand.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
McGinnis throws a leg kick but Nordquist sees it coming and moves out of range.
Nordquist misses the shot to the body.
McGinnis is using his height advantage well here, landing a good percentage of his punches.
McGinnis misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Nordquist feints the counter takedown.
Nordquist misses with a body shot
and McGinnis counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Nordquist takes a swing at McGinnis's ribcage but misses.
Nordquist looks to throw a body kick
and McGinnis counters with a lovely straight right hand!


Nordquist is rocked!
Nordquist walks right into a perfectly timed right hook and goes down hard! He's out cold! The ref cradles Nordquist limp body while McGinnis jumps on to the cage and waves to the roaring crowd. Wow that was just a brutal knockout!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:14 of round 2, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Aaron McGinnis!
After winning the bout, Aaron McGinnis thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
