The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Ruane swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Gates is looking for a counter combo.

Gates clinches.
Gates could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Gates is trying to pull guard but Ruane turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
Both fighters working to control the clinch.

Ruane pulls guard effortlessly.
Ruane tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Gates throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Gates postures up in Ruane's guard and throws a big left but Ruane blocks it.
Ruane wants to sweep but no luck.
Ruane thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Gates throws a sloppy head kick and Ruane moves out of range easily.
Gates wants to clinch up but Ruane keeps it at a distance.

Gates closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Gates not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Gates thows a huge punch but Ruane dodges it nicely.
Ruane avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Gates.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Gates takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.

Gates stands up from half guard.
Ruane looks winded!

Gates pushes Ruane off and scrambles back to his feet.

Gates tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

Gates gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Ruane to score an easy takedown into full guard.

Gates throws his legs up looking for a submission but Ruane uses it to pass to side control.

Gates bucks up and manages to escape back to his feet!
Gates dives in and grabs Ruane's left leg, looking for a takedown. Ruane pushes down on Gates's head and hops out.

Gates gets caught flat footed, as Ruane shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Gates has thrown up a leg looking for a triangle. Ruane doesn't defend quickly enough and Gates has managed to lock this one up! Can Ruane escape?! NO! He's tapping out! Damn, that was a quick submission - congrats to Gates on a fantastic submission victory.
