PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between John Brown (ranked 3944 p4p, 365 weight class) and Billy Bolek (ranked 1638 p4p, 158 weight class). Brown comes into the arena with Some Bodies Gonna Get It blaring out of the sound system. Bolek has chosen Iron Maiden - Run To The Hills as his entrance music. The crowd giving both fighters a great reception on their way into the arena. That's good to see.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 16 - 19 - 2, fighting out of Hilo, John Brown!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 12 - 7 - 0, fighting out of London, Billy Bolek!
The judges for this bout are Sam Margolis, Daniel Bishop and James Atkins.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Brown swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Bolek tries to bum rush Brown with a series of wild strikes but Brown uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Brown changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.
Brown steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Bolek.
Bolek misses with a two punch combination.
Bolek tries to clinch up.
Brown circles away from the clinch attempt.
Bolek is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Brown swung with a counter right hand that didn't connect.
Bolek tries a head kick but it misses.
Brown has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Brown there as he acknowledges the shot.


It looks like John Brown has been cut.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Brown paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button.
Bolek throws a series of punches but Brown avoids them all with ease.
Brown tries to score a power double leg takedown but Bolek sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Brown somewhat.

and Brown counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Bolek is trying to control but Brown passes into side control!
Brown is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Bolek will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.

Brown connects with a decent looking elbow from side control that caused Bolek some visible discomfort.

Brown has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Brown throws an elbow but Bolek slips to the side and avoids it well.
Brown tries to land with some ground and pound but misses.
Brown postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.
Bolek felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.
Bolek avoids any damage from the ground and pound of Brown.
Brown is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Bolek will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.

Brown is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Bolek's shoulder. That is not cool.
Brown throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.

Brown is nestled in close to Bolek, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

Brown will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

Brown manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Bolek on his heels. He'll look to pass Bolek's guard now, I'm sure.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Brown wants to control from the top but Bolek keeps moving.

Brown is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Bolek can do to turn this around?

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Bolek can do anything to dispel that myth.

That's time! Brown's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!


Bolek's corner calls for a 1, 2 combination and Bolek duly obliges.
Billy Bolek seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Bolek tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Brown manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Brown tries to counter with a takedown but Bolek is quick to defend against it.
Brown scores with the left hand. Bolek knows he should have avoided that one.
Brown displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Bolek throws out the jab.

Brown looks up at the clock and then as Bolek takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Brown smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Brown connects with a nice short shot to Bolek's temple.

Bolek really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Brown. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

John Brown is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Brown is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Brown scores with a hook to the body. Bolek takes a step back and tries to catch his breath.
Bolek connects with a right hand. Brown shakes it off.
Bolek tries to close the distance and clinch but Brown swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Boom, another hit is landed. "You're gunna get knocked out" taunts Brown, as that shot connected.
Brown moves away from the strike by Bolek.
Bolek bobs and weaves and unloads with a good uppercut.
Brown shoots and misses
and Bolek connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Billy Bolek has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Bolek misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
A head kick misses from Bolek.
Brown misses with a jab, cross combination.
No joy there for Bolek, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Brown changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.
Bolek takes one on the button.

And that's the end of the fight!
John Brown showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Brown, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
