Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Rigoberto Vargas (ranked 6256 p4p, 0 weight class) and Antonio Barrera (ranked 5947 p4p, 0 weight class). Antonio Barrera is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Rigoberto Vargas!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Antonio Barrera!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Cesar, Leandro Rodrigues and Luis Engracia.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Vargas shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Barrera manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Barrera is controlling Vargas's posture.
Vargas postures up.

Barrera is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Barrera pulls Vargas in close to prevent any damage.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Vargas distracts Barrera with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.

Barrera looking to hit a scissor sweep but Vargas is one step ahead there.
Barrera is looking to sweep but instead, Vargas has passed into half guard.
Barrera trying to control from the bottom.
Vargas wants to stand but his hand is trapped. Barrera uses the opportunity to regain full guard.

Vargas loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Vargas will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Vargas cracks Barrera with a solid left hand.
Vargas throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Barrera works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

Barrera has his foot on Vargas's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Vargas works his way back into a safe position though.

Vargas has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Barrera is proving hard to escape from.
We've been informed that Barrera has been working hard on his conditioning in the buildup to the fight.

That was a close round but I would say that Rigoberto Vargas will probably get the nod.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!



Vargas shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Barrera is trying to defend but Vargas finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Rigoberto Vargas overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Barrera is concentrating on defense, preventing Vargas from advancing position.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Vargas connects with a nice short shot to Barrera's temple.

Vargas throws an elbow that misses. Barrera uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Vargas's guard. Nice move by Barrera!

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Vargas clinches up against the cage.
Vargas has Barrera pressed against the cage.
Vargas stalling in the clinch.
The crowd are getting pretty annoyed with Vargas for his constant stalling in the clinch and are voicing their displeasure.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Vargas misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Barrera.

Barrera has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Vargas clear over his head and slammed him to the mat!
Vargas prevents Barrera from getting a body triangle.

Barrera working from the back looking to end the fight with a rear naked choke. Vargas is doing well to defend. Barrera seems to have got his hand under the chin though and he's sunk the choke in! Vargas is forced to tap and this one is over!
