PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Roddy Piper (ranked 3162 p4p, 350 weight class) and Dirk Nowak (ranked 6762 p4p, 621 weight class). Piper comes to the cage accompanied by Roddy entrance. Both fighters really staring each other down here, as Dirk Nowak enters the cage!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Roddy Piper!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Dirk Nowak!
The judges for this bout are Colin Fray, Chris Saunders and Micheangelo Fripello.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Piper tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Nowak swivels and escapes.

Piper shoots in and bounces Nowak off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Piper stands up over Nowak, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Piper is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Piper trying to control the position from guard on top but Nowak is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Piper postures up and lands a big shot to Nowak's brow.
Piper might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Nowak is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Piper could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Nowak controls Piper momentarily but Piper frees himself.
Nowak really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Piper. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Nowak wants to sweep here but Piper controlling him for the moment.
Piper has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Piper scoring with punches to the head and body.
Piper scoring with some ground and pound.
Piper trying to control the position from guard on top but Nowak is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Nowak is working an open guard so Piper takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Piper enables Nowak to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Piper manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Piper wriggles free and stands up.
Piper shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Nowak pinned against the cage. Nowak gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Nowak loads up on a big right hand but Piper slips the punch.

Nowak shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Piper manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Nowak postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Nowak looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Piper is on top in guard.

Piper wants to control but Nowak is keeping him busy.

Piper stands up.

Nowak misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.

Nowak darts in and clinches Piper up against the cage.
Nowak stalling here - the referee won't stand for too much of that.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Nowak with the Thai clinch. He's looking to land a big knee but he's not managed it this time.
Piper is trying to drag Nowak to the mat but Nowak just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Roddy Piper. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Piper is fighting off a takedown attempt but Nowak is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Piper to the mat. Piper regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.
Nowak throws an elbow that misses. Piper uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Nowak's guard. Nice move by Piper!

Piper stands up from guard. Let's bang!

Nowak pushes Piper up against the cage in a clinch.
Piper tries to pull guard but Nowak forces him back to his feet, against the cage.
Nowak slowing the pace effectively.
Nowak lands on the inside with an uppercut.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Nowak lands a nice trip takedown into half guard.

Nowak missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.

Piper won't allow Nowak to pass to mount.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Roddy Piper will probably get the nod.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Piper misses with a jab, cross combination.
Nowak throws a looping overhand right but Piper ducks down to avoid it.
Nowak misses with a takedown attempt - Piper sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

Nowak closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Piper quickly recovers to half guard.
Nowak with the ground and pound but Piper uses the opportunity to regain guard.
Nowak throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Piper works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Nowak postures up in Piper's guard and throws a big left but Piper blocks it.
Nowak content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.
Piper looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio.

Piper is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Nowak has hold of Piper's hands but Piper slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.

Piper is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Nowak trying to control here.
Nowak is staying active underneath Piper, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Piper is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Nowak is just riding it out for now. Piper eventually gives up the hold.

Piper is working for a submission of some sort.

Nowak wants to improve his position but Piper is controlling well.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Nowak can do anything to dispel that myth.
Nowak is refusing to be controlled, as Piper sits in half guard.

Nowak is defending against the submission attempts here by Piper.
Nowak is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Nowak trying to hold on to Piper's head to control him but Piper postures up.
Nowak is looking for a sweep. Piper is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
It looks like Piper is going to stand back up.
Piper landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent.
Piper looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Nowak with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

Piper is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Nowak doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Piper.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Piper is working for a kimura but Nowak is defending it quite comfortably.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Roddy Piper dominated that second round.
That's time! Piper's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!


Piper uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Nowak.
Nowak is trying hard to land a takedown here. Piper sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.

Piper closes the distance and clinches.
Piper gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Nowak.
Nowak tries to land a knee to the body but he is off balance and Piper avoids it.
Nowak is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Piper is defending well.
Roddy Piper has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Dirk Nowak.
Nowak is stalling here. The referee will be looking to step in if he doesn't pick up the pace.

Piper jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Nowak walks away with a smile on his face. Piper gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
A looping hook to the body misses from Nowak. Piper does a little dance to reset his feet.

Nowak fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Piper sprawls well initially but Nowak persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Piper looking for submissions from an awkward position here.
Piper moves into full guard.

Piper has his feet on Nowak's thighs here. He's pushed Nowak off and worked for a very quick armbar from the bottom! He's flipped onto his stomach and he's cranking hard on the arm! Nowak screams in pain and taps out! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:52 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Roddy Piper!
Roddy Piper was full of energy after the big win and talked about how he thinks he can do big things in this sport. The crowd were appreciative of his determination to succeed.
