Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of
19 - 20 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Jan Pope!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of
16 - 22 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Shinya Aoki !
The judges for this bout are Trevor Gratis, Alec Ball and William Peck.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Pope moves away from the strike by Aoki .
Aoki tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Pope thows a leg kick but Aoki checks it
and Aoki counters with a nice double leg into side control. Pope won't be happy with that.
Pope sneaks out the side door and pushes Aoki away - he's back to his feet. The crowd show their appreciation for the escape.
Aoki shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
An attempted straight right counter from Pope misses the target.
Aoki 's coach down at Blackscar Fitness was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on Aoki 's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight.
A big left from Pope misses.
Pope has closed the distance and engaged Aoki in a clinch.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Aoki fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Aoki escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Pope looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
Aoki looking to land some kicks to the body here.

Aoki on the wrong end of a vicious looking body shot.
Pope goes for a high kick. It partially lands.
Aoki shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Pope sprawls well. Pope wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Aoki gets slowly back to his feet.

Aoki scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
Aoki thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Aoki postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Aoki wants to control but Pope is keeping him busy.
Pope is looking for a sweep.
Pope takes a nasty elbow to the side of the head.

Pope is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Aoki looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Pope has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Aoki is working away from the top position though.
Aoki wants to lay and pray for a moment but Pope keeps working.
Pope trying to control but Aoki postures up.
Pope wants to improve his position but Aoki is controlling well.

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.

Aoki is keen to just control but Pope is a slippery customer.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Aoki takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
Aoki is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Aoki connects with a nice short shot to Pope's temple.

Pope has hold of Aoki 's hands but Aoki slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
Pope is staying active underneath Aoki , who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Pope wants to control but Aoki is keeping busy.

A close round but Shinya Aoki will probably get the nod.
That's time! Pope's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.

Pope leaves Aoki with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Aoki is defended easily by Pope.
Pope misses with a low kick.
Pope tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Aoki was well out of range. Poor timing from Pope.
Pope throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Pope jabs Aoki right on the nose. Aoki blinks but takes it well.
Aoki goes for a double leg but Pope avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Pope continues to drive forward.

Pope swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Pope lands a pitter patter jab to the forehead of his opponent.
Pope connects with a good right hand that stumbles Aoki . Aoki circles away out of range and recomposes himself.

Aoki scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
Aoki is trying for a kimura here. Pope looks like he's in a lot of pain... and he's tapping out! Aoki wins by kimura!
