PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Ragnar Diaz (ranked 1794 p4p, 216 weight class) and Samuel Cooke (ranked 2288 p4p, 272 weight class). Cooke has chosen Harm's Way - Warriors Will Reign as his entrance music. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 2 - 0, fighting out of London, Ragnar Diaz!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Samuel Cooke!
The judges for this bout are Yves DeLean, Robert Douchet and William Peck.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Diaz lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.
Cooke lands a lovely overhand right.
Diaz wants to clinch up but Cooke keeps it at a distance.
Diaz tries to close the distance and clinch but Cooke swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Cooke is clearly looking to counter with head kicks.
Diaz takes a swing at Cooke's ribcage but misses.
Diaz swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.

Cooke closes the distance and pushes Diaz back into the cage.
A nice left hand lands by Diaz.
Cooke is looking for a takedown.
Diaz trying to land knees to the body.
Diaz throws an elbow but it misses.
Diaz is trying to push Cooke away but Cooke has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.
Cooke throws an elbow but it misses.
Cooke blocks a punch to the side of the head.
A knee to the head by Cooke.


It looks like Ragnar Diaz has been cut.
Cooke looking for a takedown.
Diaz tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.

Diaz's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Diaz misses with a wild body shot.
Cooke looks to land a combination. Diaz sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots.
Diaz jabbing away but nothing is landing.

Diaz tries to move into range but Cooke moves to the side and lands with a nice right hand.
Diaz moves out of range as Cooke strikes.
Cooke pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Cooke's coach down at Marty Robbin's Fight Ranch™ was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on Cooke's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight.
Diaz throws a series of punches but Cooke moves out of range.
Cooke throws a fast counter high kick but Diaz manages to duck under it in time.
Diaz looks to land a combination but Cooke avoids it well.
Diaz doesn't manage to clinch there - Cooke circles away.
Cooke throws a big counter head kick but Diaz avoids it with no problem.
Diaz looks to land a left hand but Cooke moved out of range nicely.
Diaz lands a right hook to the body.
Diaz throws a hook but Cooke avoids it easily.
Cooke smiles there as he lands a nice right hand right on the button.
Diaz thuds his right hand into Cooke's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.
Cooke misses with a body shot.
Diaz misses with a hook. Cooke ducked under it nicely.
Cooke feints the counter takedown.
Diaz tries to clinch up.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Cooke.
Ragnar Diaz has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Samuel Cooke.
Cooke shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Diaz defends it nicely.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Diaz is trying to break the clinch but Cooke is controlling him.

Diaz manages to break the clinch.
Cooke tries to score a power double leg takedown but Diaz sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Cooke somewhat.
Diaz swings away with a leg kick that misses.
Cooke lands a head shot.

Cooke fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Diaz, pushing him back against the cage.
Diaz is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
Diaz scores with a shoulder strike.
Cooke blocks a body shot from Diaz.
Diaz has a couple of punches blocked by Cooke.
Cooke has Diaz pressed against the cage.
Diaz wants to break free but Cooke has control.

Cooke manages to break the clinch.
Cooke throws a lazy head kick
and Diaz cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Diaz is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Diaz misses with a two punch combination.
Diaz slips under a jab from Cooke.
Cooke uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Diaz.
Diaz takes an uppercut right on the button but keeps his composure.
Diaz uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Cooke.
Diaz feinted there with a counter leg kick.
Ragnar Diaz is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Cooke fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Nice takedown defense from Diaz. No joy for Cooke on that attempt.
Diaz tries to counter by moving into the clinch but Cooke manages to circle out of the way.
Cooke staying out of range there.
Diaz connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Cooke momentarily.


Cooke is rocked!
Cooke throws a low kick but Diaz moves out of range easily.
Cooke is still on wobbly legs! Can Diaz finish him?
Cooke misses with the combination.
Diaz misses with a two punch combination.
Cooke seems to have recovered his senses.

Cooke slips a straight right by Diaz.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Cooke has taken the fight to the clinch.
The pace slowing considerably in the clinch, as Cooke takes a break from that fighting nonsense to think about the finer things in life.

Cooke pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
A thudding body kick lands there by Cooke!
Diaz looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
Cooke has used his reach advantage pretty well so far tonight.
Cooke lands with a kick to the temple. Diaz shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?"
Diaz takes a jab on the nose. He smiles like he loves it and keeps coming.

Diaz clinches up with Cooke and pushes him back against the cage.
Cooke is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Diaz pulls him back up using the underhooks.
Cooke tries to land knees in the clinch but Diaz avoids the damage to the body.
Diaz on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.
Cooke misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Diaz.
A frustrated look appears on Diaz's face as he tries to break the clinch.

Diaz pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Cooke listening to his corner there, landing a nice uppercut.
The crowd applaud the fighters' efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Cooke lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.

Cooke feints and as Diaz raises his hands in defense, Cooke changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Cooke pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Diaz is keeping the position for now.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Samuel Cooke will probably get the nod.
The cut man is working on Ragnar Diaz's cut.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Diaz steps to his left, right into the path of a big body kick from Cooke. That one must have hurt.
Cooke tries to clinch but Diaz is having none of it.
Cooke is using his reach advantage to land shots from outside his opponent's range.
Diaz wants to land a leg kick but Cooke is out of range.
Cooke is loading up here, looking for a big counter of his own.
Cooke on the wrong end of a nice hook.
Cooke avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Cooke scores with a jab to the jaw of his opponent.

Cooke rushes Diaz and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

Diaz escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Cooke misses with a wild body shot.
Diaz attempts a leg kick but it's missed by a good margin.
Diaz takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Diaz blocks a head kick by Cooke.
No joy there for Cooke, who threw a few shots but didn't land.

Cooke looking to score a takedown here. Diaz is defending well but Cooke drives through and ends up in Diaz's guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Cooke stops Diaz from standing up.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Cooke accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Cooke showing good wrestling skills to control the position.
Cooke tries to free his leg and advance position but Diaz is retaining full guard.
Cooke trying to control but Diaz is working from the bottom.
Diaz might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Diaz is looking to stand up but Cooke isn't so interested in that idea.
Cooke has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Diaz wants to get back to his feet but he's too absorbed in his own little project and Cooke manages to pass to side control.
Diaz is not content to let Cooke control the position.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Diaz tries to roll over but Cooke keeps him under control.
Diaz regains full guard, whilst avoiding punches from Cooke.
Cooke won't allow Diaz to get back to his feet.
Diaz on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Diaz tries to get out of the position.
Cooke throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Diaz works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Diaz bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Cooke's guard.

Diaz is looking to stand up but Cooke won't let him.
Diaz knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Cooke on the ground.
Cooke keeping moving, preventing Diaz from controlling successfully.

Cooke pushes a forearm under Diaz's chin to create some space. He's escaped his hips and pivoted quickly for an armbar! Can he extend the arm? Yes, Diaz is tapping out! Damn, that was fast!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:58 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Samuel Cooke!
