The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Excellent takedown into side control there by Rios.
Rios lands an elbow.
Bates wants to get back to his feet.
Rios in side control, trying to ground and pound but not landing this time.
Rios wants to control but Bates is keeping him busy.
Rios lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Bates down.
Rios throws a strike aimed at the side of Bates's head but Bates avoids it well.

Rios goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Bates rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Rios's guard! Nice work there by Bates!

Bates gets to his feet - Rios follows without any prompting.
Rios has a nice red mark on his side after a thudding body kick by Bates.

Bates lands a big head kick that sends Rios tumbling to the mat! Bates takes a step backwards and waves Rios back to his feet - he wants the finish!

Rios is rocked!
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Rios gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Bates counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.
Rios is still on wobbly legs! Can Bates finish him?

That's one minute gone in the round.
Nice takedown defense from Rios. No joy for Bates on that attempt.
Rios seems to have recovered his senses.

Rios gets the takedown into side control.

Bates throws Rios to one side and escapes!
Rios has a takedown stuffed.
Bates lifts his leg as if looking to counter with a high kick.
Rios fails with a takedown attempt.
BIll Bates has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Nate Rios.
Bates stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Bates wants it to stay on the feet.
Rios closes the distance and clinches up with Bates, looking for a takedown. Rios pushes Bates against the cage but Bates circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Rios looks winded!
Rios shoots in for a takedown but Bates shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Rios fails with the takedown
and Bates counters with a series of strikes that really hurt Rios! The ref looks into his eyes and sees nobody home - he's called the fight! This one is all over!
