PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Jacob Rojas (ranked 24997 p4p, 0 weight class) and James Mason (ranked 5888 p4p, 0 weight class). Well, the cameraman is lingering on a pretty young lady for a bit too long there. Keep your eyes on the prize buddy or you'll miss the fighter intros!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 4 - 0, fighting out of New York, Jacob Rojas!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, James Mason!
The judges for this bout are Jorge Garcia, Franklyn Lucas and Anthony Taglia.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Rojas throws a series of punches but Mason avoids them all with ease.
Rojas lands with a cross to side of his opponent's head.
Rojas really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Mason shoots for a takedown but Rojas saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
James Mason seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Rojas misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.

Mason clinches up with Rojas and pushes him back against the cage.
A nice glancing elbow lands by Rojas.
Mason tries to score a body lock takedown but Rojas shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
Mason tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Jacob Rojas has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of James Mason.
Rojas is trying to break free.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

and Mason counters with a three punch combo that has Rojas backing up. Rojas nods at Mason to acknowledge the strikes.

Rojas misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Mason dives in and grabs Rojas's left leg, looking for a takedown. Rojas pushes down on Mason's head and hops out.

A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Rojas.
Nice straight punches there by Rojas. You know Roy Jones Jr respects the hands of Rojas.
Rojas shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Rojas throws a hook but Mason avoids it easily.

Mason moves into range and clinches up with Rojas.
Mason comes over the top with an elbow. That landed flush.


It looks like Jacob Rojas has been cut.
Mason is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Rojas gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.

Rojas tries to break the clinch but Mason is controlling the position.

Mason pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Rojas stuffs the takedown attempt from Mason. Mason gets slowly back to his feet.
Rojas appears to be looking for a counter takedown.
A punch combination from Mason misses.
Mason blocks a low kick nicely.
Rojas throws a head kick that misses.
Rojas misses with a two punch combination.

Mason takes the fight into the clinch.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Rojas is trying to stall.

Rojas lands a hook to the side of the head.

Mason drags the fight down to the ground.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Mason wants to sweep but no luck.
Rojas trying to stand up but can't free himself from Mason's guard.

Mason looking for a guillotine here but Rojas defends easily.

Rojas stands up and waves to Mason to follow him.
Rojas is using his reach advantage well here, landing the more effective single shots from range.

Mason closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Some stalling of biblical proportions here from Rojas.

Mason ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Mason no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

Mason has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Rojas is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Mason.
Mason takes an elbow right on the bridge of the nose and winces in pain.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Jacob Rojas will probably get the nod.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Mason misses with a takedown attempt - Rojas sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Mason takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him.
Rojas dives in for a single leg takedown but Mason sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Mason is defended easily by Rojas.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Mason throws a head kick but Rojas moves out of range.
Mason wings a very wild body shot but it does the job and lands to the midsection.
Rojas shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Mason shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Rojas as he jumps to the side.
Rojas appears to be looking for a counter takedown.

Rojas doesn't manage to clinch there - Mason circles away.
Mason darts in looking for a takedown but Rojas gets double underhooks and turns Mason into the cage.
Rojas attempts a counter takedown but Mason avoids it well and moves away.
Rojas tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Mason manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Rojas tries to score a power double leg takedown but Mason sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Rojas somewhat.

and Mason counters with a left and a right that stings Rojas.

The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Rojas goes for a double leg but Mason avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Mason continues to drive forward.
Mason with the counter takedown but Rojas avoids it easily.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Mason looks for a takedown but Rojas sprawls well.
Rojas misses with a lunging right hand
and Mason counters with a stiff right hand.

Mason has closed the distance and engaged Rojas in a clinch.
A real battle for position is taking place between these two warriors.
Rojas will no doubt start fighting again in a minute but for now he's just having a little rest, leaning Mason up against the cage.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Mason is trying to drag Rojas to the mat but Rojas just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.
Rojas controlling the action here for a moment.

Mason breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Rojas closes this distance looking for a takedown but Mason circles away.
Mason is pinned up against the cage taking some big shots here. The referee is looking closely deciding whether he should stop the fight.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Rojas moves out of range of the body kick.

Mason moves into the clinch successfully.

Good anti-grappling being displayed by Mason as Rojas tries to tie him up.

Rojas circles away from the clinch attempt.

Mason misses with a takedown attempt - Rojas sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

James Mason showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!

Rojas is using his height advantage well here, landing a good percentage of his punches.
Mason will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

Mason lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Rojas circles away quickly and effectively.

Mason throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Rojas's waist but Rojas gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Mason off to one side.

Rojas throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Mason.

Mason drives through and clinches with Rojas against the cage.

Mason goes for a takedown in the clinch but Rojas prevents it.

Rojas is trying to slow down the pace in the clinch, to catch his breath.

Mason dodges an elbow strike from Rojas.
Rojas is pressed up against the cage. Mason has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Rojas down to the mat. Rojas avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Rojas shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Mason sprawls well. Mason wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Rojas gets slowly back to his feet.

Mason shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Rojas but Rojas pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Rojas keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Rojas will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.
Mason is looking for the big counter here.

Rojas closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Mason's guard.
Rojas won't allow Mason to sweep him here.
Mason is trying to keep Rojas in close.
Rojas tries to stand but Mason is controlling from the bottom.
Rojas will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Rojas is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Jacob Rojas.
I think Rojas has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
