PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Timothy Rex (ranked 5067 p4p, 481 weight class) and AJ Barakus (ranked 7502 p4p, 567 weight class). Both these guys have solid standup skills and neither is particularly fantastic on the ground, so let's hope for a nice standup war!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 4 - 0, fighting out of London, Timothy Rex!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, AJ Barakus!
The judges for this bout are Colin Fray, Roger Salmon and Jeff Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Barakus misses with a body kick.
Rex checks the leg kick.

Barakus gets tackled into the cage by Rex. Rex maintains the clinch.
A nice left hand lands by Barakus.
Rex lands a knee to the body.
Barakus blocks an elbow strike.
Rex creates a bit of space for himself and sneaks an elbow through Barakus's defenses.

Nice body punch from Rex - that landed with a thud.

Barakus manages to break the clinch.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Barakus.

Rex definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight.

Rex tries to land a knee to the body but he is off balance and Barakus avoids it.

Barakus pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Rex lands with a quick shot inside that doesn't really do much damage.

Barakus wants the takedown. Rex is fighting it off but Barakus persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Rex's guard against the cage.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Barakus shoots in but no luck this time.
Rex tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Barakus manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Barakus misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Rex leaves Barakus with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Timothy Rex has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of AJ Barakus.
Rex tries to clinch but Barakus is having none of it.
Rex tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Barakus paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Rex throws a nice elbow but it doesn't land.
Rex tries to land a knee to the body but he is off balance and Barakus avoids it.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Rex has a couple of punches blocked by Barakus.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

AJ Barakus seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Barakus's head jolts backwards as he takes an uppercut right on the button!

Barakus throws some sloppy strikes off his back.
Rex tries to stand but Barakus is controlling from the bottom.
Rex really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Rex wants to stand and escape but instead Barakus has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but AJ Barakus will probably get the nod - 10:9.

Rex gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Rex swings wildly with an uppercut but Barakus uses good head movement to avoid it.

Barakus has Rex pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Barakus pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Rex tumbling to the mat - Barakus dives into Rex's guard.

Barakus is just content to waste time from the top position. Rex takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.

Rex tries to push off, looking to stand up, but Barakus manages to move to mount!
Poor strikes thrown by Barakus there. More accuracy and less frantic strikes would help!

Barakus stands up from the dominant position. He obviously fancies his chances standing.
Barakus throws a head kick but Rex moves out of range.
Barakus lands with a nice body kick.

Rex gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Rex tries to land a knee to the body but he is off balance and Barakus avoids it.

Barakus jabs Rex right on the nose. Rex blinks but takes it well.
AJ Barakus seems to be getting the better of the standup.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

AJ Barakus comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Barakus has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
