Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between BJ Penn (ranked 809 p4p, 40 weight class) and Byron Tipton (ranked 1934 p4p, 104 weight class). Penn comes to the cage accompanied by Justin Bieber ft. Ariana Grande - Let Me Think Bout You. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, BJ Penn!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 13 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Byron Tipton!
The judges for this bout are David Schapiro, Lou da Vinci and Steve Montenegro.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
We've got one fighter who appears to only be looking to counter and the other not looking particularly aggressive either, so we could be in for a dull fight.
Penn works his jab well there, keeping his opponent at a distance.
Penn throws an ugly left hook that misses

and Tipton counters by clinching up.
I was talking to Penn's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight.
A head punch on the inside from Penn fails to land.
Penn tried to land a shot to the body but connects with Tipton's elbow.
Penn works on Tipton's body with a couple of short punches.
Tipton takes a shot to the head.
Penn is looking to break free of the clinch but Tipton has double underhooks.
Penn misses with some punches.
Penn throws a blind hook that connects with the side of Tiptons head.
Tipton misses with a hook to the ribs.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Penn tries to work over Tipton's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target.

Tipton's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Tipton takes an uppercut right on the button but keeps his composure.

Penn misses with an uppercut.
Penn throws a right and a left that Tipton avoids nicely.
A left lands for Penn.


It looks like Byron Tipton has been cut.
Penn comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range.

Penn throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Tipton stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.
Nice uppercut lands for Penn. That snapped Tipton's head back.
BJ Penn seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Penn uses good footwork to get in and out, landing a nice hook.
A shot to the body from Penn misses
and Tipton cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Tipton avoids the body shot from Penn.
Tipton changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.
Tipton moves out of range as Penn strikes.
And an attempted straight right on the counter from Tipton! But no joy.

Penn swings for the body but Tipton moves out of range.
Penn throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Tipton sees it coming and avoids it easily.
A slow jab from Penn misses its intended target.
Tipton takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.
Penn throws a body shot but no joy.

Tipton gets cracked with a nice right hand there by Penn.
Penn looks to land a left hand but Tipton moved out of range nicely.

Penn swings away with a body shot that misses
and Tipton connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Penn catches Tipton with a nice straight right. He seems pissed - ooooh, it's on now! On like donkey kong!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Penn fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Tipton manages to avoid it.
Tipton tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away.

and Tipton counters with a shoot takedown. Penn fights it but they end up in guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Penn knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Tipton on the ground.

Tipton drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Tipton jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Tipton loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Tipton is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.

In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Tipton working his ground and pound in the gym. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though.

Tipton thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Tipton wants to control from the top but Penn keeps moving.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Penn holds on and takes a little breather.
Penn's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Penn wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.

Tipton stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Penn swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Penn is pulling down on Tipton's head. It's preventing any offense from Tipton, at least for the moment.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

Tipton drops back looking for a leg! Penn is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Penn manages to kick Tipton off! Tipton jumps back into Penn's guard.

Tipton had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Penn defends it easily.
Penn seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world.
Tipton uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Penn.

Tipton is rocked!
Penn dips to his left and cracks Tipton with an uppercut!
Tipton is still on wobbly legs! Can Penn finish him?
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Tipton gets clipped by a big right hand and goes down spinning to the canvas! Penn gets the back mount and begins to drop bombs on his rocked foe! Tipton is too out of it to defend against the strikes and the referee jumps in to save him from the beatdown!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:55 of round 3, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). BJ Penn!
A very excited looking BJ Penn rambled incoherently for about 5 minutes post fight about how awesome he is. It was kinda funny for a while but then everyone got annoyed.
The defeated Byron Tipton had this to say: 'I know I am only 24, but I am retiring. Obviously I dont have what it takes to become a champion, there is no reason to put my body at harm for something that I suck at.'.
