PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Aapo Kukkanen (ranked 9067 p4p, 777 weight class) and Aulis Homelius (ranked 6376 p4p, 667 weight class). Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Aapo Kukkanen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Aulis Homelius!
The judges for this bout are Ben Watson, Steve Erwin and Skip Squint.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Homelius throws a series of punches but Kukkanen moves out of range.
Homelius misses with a low kick.
Homelius has been working on his striking defense in training and it's paying off as Kukkanen is landing a low percentage of strikes.
Kukkanen swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Homelius slips a straight right by Kukkanen.
Kukkanen throws an overhand right that lands on Homelius's shoulder, as Homelius tries to avoid the shot.
Homelius tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away.
Kukkanen checks a leg kick.
Kukkanen throws a lazy uppercut

and Homelius counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Homelius.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Homelius looking to control the position here, rather than advance.

Kukkanen is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Homelius is aware though and is defending well.

Homelius is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
It looks like Homelius might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.
Homelius's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
Homelius prevents Kukkanen from getting back to his feet.
Homelius is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Kukkanen looks to score with a jab to the body but Homelius is just out of range.
And Homelius tries to counter it with a takedown but Kukkanen pushes his down on his head and steps out.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Homelius looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Kukkanen!
Homelius moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now.
Kukkanen is looking for a sweep.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Kukkanen is looking to reverse the position.

Kukkanen is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Homelius tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
More stalling from Homelius.

Kukkanen is trying to escape the mount.
Kukkanen looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio.
Homelius controlling the pace for now.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Homelius is continuing to stall.
Kukkanen is looking to get back to his feet - it's going to be hard from this position.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Kukkanen tries to hold on but Homelius postures up.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Aulis Homelius dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.



Homelius throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Kukkanen was covering up waiting for the punch and Homelius finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Homelius got a little sloppy there for a moment and Kukkanen has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Homelius has managed to get both his arms back between Kukkanen's legs - danger averted.
Aulis Homelius has got the better of the ground game so far.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Kukkanen is looking to sweep but instead, Homelius has passed into half guard.
Kukkanen on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Kukkanen tries to get out of the position.
Homelius seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Homelius with more of the same as he continues to hold on.
Homelius wants to pass to mount but Kukkanen is defending the position.
Kukkanen is trying to stand.
Homelius content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Homelius working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.

Homelius is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
A punch combination from Kukkanen misses.
Homelius feints the counter takedown.

Homelius looks for a takedown but Kukkanen sprawls well.
Kukkanen throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Homelius tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away.
Aapo Kukkanen seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Kukkanen misses with a double jab.
Homelius falls off balance throwing a combination
and Homelius takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Kukkanen lands a nice looking body shot.
Kukkanen misses with a jab, cross combination.
Homelius ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent.
The step up in weight doesn't seem to be a problem for Homelius. He's performing admirably here against the bigger man.

Homelius shoots in and bounces Kukkanen off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Kukkanen is wriggling around but Homelius manages to pass to half guard.

Homelius stops Kukkanen from getting back to his feet.
Homelius perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Homelius is thwarting Kukkanen's attempts to control the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Aulis Homelius showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Back to the action! This is the final round!



Homelius shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Kukkanen napping and manages to drive through into side control!
A lull in the action here as Homelius stalls from top position.
Kukkanen really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Kukkanen can't do much from the bottom here.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

The adventures of Homelius the control monster continue. Boring.

Homelius working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.

Kukkanen is trying to get back to half guard.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Kukkanen avoids a punch combination nicely.
Homelius throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Kukkanen is looking to counter punch.
Homelius misses with a takedown
enabling Kukkanen to counter with a crisp jab.

Homelius has a takedown stuffed.

Aulis Homelius is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Kukkanen throws a big shot that misses.
Homelius only half commits to the counter leg kick.
Homelius shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Kukkanen as he avoids it easily.
Aapo Kukkanen has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Aulis Homelius.
Kukkanen misses with a wild combination.
Kukkanen just misses with a punch to the body.

A big right from Kukkanen misses.
Homelius has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Homelius looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Kukkanen is fending him off so far but Homelius persists. Nope, Kukkanen circles away and we're back to standing.
Kukkanen works over Homelius's head and body with a nice combination.
Kukkanen tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Homelius was well out of range. Poor timing from Kukkanen.
A nice side step and Homelius releases a counter shot to the body, but it doesn't find it's home.
Kukkanen misses with a jab to the body

and Homelius counters with a shoot takedown. Kukkanen fights it but they end up in guard.
Homelius is standing up over Kukkanen. Kukkanen looks to escape but Homelius dives into side control.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Homelius is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Kukkanen will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Kukkanen is trying to improve his position.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Aapo Kukkanen.
I think Homelius has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
