PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Zane Mason (ranked 212 p4p, 30 weight class) and Jason Rage (ranked 310 p4p, 46 weight class). Rage has chosen For Heavy Metal we will die! as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 36 - 18 - 0, fighting out of New York, Zane Mason!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 22 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Jason Rage!
The judges for this bout are , Frank Antenori and Jack Bonds.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Rage blocks a head kick by Mason.
A big right from Mason misses.
Rage fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Mason on the side of the head.
Rage avoids the clinch attempt nicely.

Rage tries to keep at a distance but Mason has taken the fight into the clinch.
A short right from Rage on the inside.
Mason struggles to land a body shot inside as Rage controls his hands.
Mason blocks an uppercut.
Rage working aggressively here.
I was talking to Mason's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight.
Rage tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.
Mason lands a hook that snaps the head of Rage backwards.

Rage breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Rage drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.

Rage wants to control but Mason is keeping him busy.
Mason is looking to regain half guard here but Rage keeps moving and retains side control.

Rage is chipping away with strikes.
Mason parries the strikes from Rage easily there. Rage is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Mason to escape.
The ground and pound from Rage seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.
Rage postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.

Mason moves forwards but Rage connects with a nice, crisp jab.

Mason lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Rage circles away quickly and effectively.

Jason Rage seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Rage walks forward and throws out a flicking leg kick. Mason checks it nicely though, as he moves to the side.

Mason throws a low kick, looking for Rage's leg but Rage calmly moves out of range.
As Mason backs off Rage throws a huge counter combo but Mason manages to avoid it all.

A little feinted left hand from Mason on the counter but he doesn't commit to it.

The fighters circle momentarily. Rage darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.
Mason throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Rage throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Mason stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!


Mason wants to clinch up but Rage keeps it at a distance.
Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Rage.

Rage is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Mason.
Some bone on bone action there as Rage checks a low kick. Luckily it wasn't a particularly hard one.

As Rage tries to get set, Mason tries to push him back and clinch up but Rage manages to avoid the attempt.

Mason connects with a good right hand that stumbles Rage. Rage circles away out of range and recomposes himself.
A looping hook to the body misses from Mason. Rage does a little dance to reset his feet.
Rage now looks to counter with a shot at the body.
Mason lands a leg kick that knocks Rage off balance momentarily.

Ooooh, nice body kick lands from Rage. Mason shrugs it off though.

Mason walks into a straight right hand from Rage.
Rage lands a slapping body shot.
Mason ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent.
Rage tries a low kick but Mason avoids it.
Rage dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Mason. That did some damage!
Mason buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.
Rage lunges at Mason with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by Mason's hand.
Rage throws a hook to the side of Mason's head but Mason sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Mason is hobbling a little on that front leg after taking quite a few leg kicks so far in this fight.
Mason takes a shot to the eye socket. That's gotta hurt.
Rage lands a nice leg kick that just misses Mason's sensitive parts.

Mason throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Rage sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Mason loads up on a big right hand but Rage slips the punch.
Rage connects with a looping right hand.

Rage throws a leg kick but Mason moved away.
Rage has been working his punching technique in the buildup to the fight and it appears to be paying off.
Rage shoots in for a double leg but Mason sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Zane Mason has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jason Rage.
Mason throws out a loose jab but Rage uses good head movement to avoid it.

Mason takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.

Jason Rage comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Rage has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
