PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Skeng Man (ranked 1382 p4p, 211 weight class) and Jack Shaw (ranked 1391 p4p, 214 weight class). Shaw is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Family Force 5 - Chainsaw. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 18 - 18 - 1, fighting out of London, Skeng Man!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 32 - 20 - 1, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jack Shaw!
The judges for this bout are Steven Brown, Chris Edwards and James Ackerman.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A slow jab from Shaw misses its intended target.
Shaw misses with an uppercut. Man saw that one coming.
Man looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
Shaw cracks Man with a right hand to the side of the head.
Shaw waving his hands out in front of him, looking to distract Man.
Shaw looks to throw the jab but Man is out of range.
As Shaw backs away, Man returns fire with a leg kick that just misses.

Man closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Shaw's guard.
Shaw is trying to control the position but Man postures up.
Man throws a strike but Shaw rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.


Shaw avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Shaw is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Man working for a triangle but Shaw defends it easily.

Man is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Shaw defends well.
Shaw pushes down on Man's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Man manages to get to full guard.
Shaw wants to control from the top but Man keeps moving.

Man working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Shaw doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Shaw manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Man can't keep his opponent in guard - Shaw advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.

Shaw wants to lay and pray for a moment but Man keeps working.
Still in half guard, Shaw seems content to control.

Shaw is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Man has managed to free his arm - good work.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Man is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Shaw pulls his head out easily.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Man is looking for a sweep. Shaw is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Shaw is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Man has managed to free his arm - good work.
Man is refusing to be controlled, as Shaw sits in half guard.

Shaw wants to pass to mount but Man is defending the position.
Man is looking to improve his position.

Shaw is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Shaw has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.

Shaw can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Man is looking to escape.
Man is trying to escape the mount.
Man gets back to half guard.
Man is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Shaw's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Shaw's back!

Man is looking for the choke from the back position but Shaw is controlling his hands well.

Shaw defends a rear naked choke attempt by controlling one of Man's arms.
Shaw tries to roll but Man sticks to his back.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Man looking to break Shaw's wrist control so he can sink in the choke. Shaw remaining controlled and patient though - he really has to keep calm otherwise Man will wrap this one up with the rear naked choke!

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Skeng Man will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Man avoids a punch combination nicely.
Man appears to be looking for a counter takedown.
The fighters circling - Shaw throws out the jab but it was never going to land.

Man shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Shaw manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Man postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Man postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.

Shaw looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Man postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Shaw is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Man, into his guard.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Shaw trying to control the position from guard on top but Man is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

That was a close second round but I would say that Skeng Man will probably get the nod.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!


Man changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Shaw tries to avoid it but Man manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Shaw to the ground. Shaw escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Shaw throws a hook but Man blocks it.
As Shaw tries to get set, Man tries to push him back and clinch up but Shaw manages to avoid the attempt.
Shaw is really struggling to land any decent head shots against his taller opponent.
Shaw looks to land a left hand but Man moved out of range nicely.
Shaw scores with a jab to the body.
Man tries for a takedown but Shaw sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Shaw circles away from the clinch attempt.
A bone on bone clash there as Man blocks the leg kick.
Man tries to counter by moving into the clinch but Shaw manages to circle out of the way.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Man.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Skeng Man. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Shaw gets through Man's defenses to land a nice punch to the side of the head.
Man is trying to drag Shaw to the mat but Shaw just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.
Shaw prevents the takedown attempt.

A short right from Shaw on the inside.
Man with the Thai clinch. He's looking to land a big knee but he's not managed it this time.
Man has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Shaw after a bit of a struggle.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Man is working for takedown but Shaw is calmly controlling the position for now.
Jack Shaw has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Still in the clinch, Shaw scores with a nice short uppercut.

Shaw is working for an americana but Man has been sneaky and has managed to get back to half guard, whilst Shaw was thinking about the submission.

Man isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Shaw stacks Man on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Shaw!
Man is positioning himself to get back to half guard.

Shaw decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Shaw throws a jab when Man was well out of range.

Man feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Shaw had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Man defends it easily.
Shaw has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Man drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Shaw dives on top into guard.
