PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Hardis Zakarov (ranked 6311 p4p, 557 weight class) and AbdulAziz Shakamutdinov (ranked 5067 p4p, 502 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Hardis Zakarov!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, AbdulAziz Shakamutdinov!
The judges for this bout are Stewart Dunkirk, Daniel Franklin and Gwen Towbar.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Shakamutdinov changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Zakarov tries to avoid it but Shakamutdinov manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Zakarov to the ground. Zakarov escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Shakamutdinov is looking to clinch.
Shakamutdinov darts in looking for a takedown but Zakarov gets double underhooks and turns Shakamutdinov into the cage.
Shakamutdinov is trying hard to land a takedown here. Zakarov sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Hardis Zakarov has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of AbdulAziz Shakamutdinov.

Zakarov has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Shakamutdinov can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Zakarov manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Shakamutdinov manages to get himself to full guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Shakamutdinov has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Zakarov is working away from the top position though.

Zakarov is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Shakamutdinov is just riding it out for now. Zakarov eventually gives up the hold.

Zakarov is working for a kimura but Shakamutdinov is defending it quite comfortably.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Zakarov wants to take a breather but Shakamutdinov is having none of it.

Zakarov decides to stand up and try his luck on the feet.

Shakamutdinov unleashes a big counter combination but Zakarov bobs and weaves and avoids any damage.

Zakarov closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Shakamutdinov quickly recovers to half guard.

Zakarov has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Shakamutdinov can do anything to dispel that myth.

Shakamutdinov felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.

The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Zakarov cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!

Zakarov moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Shakamutdinov has worked his arm free - good work by Shakamutdinov!

Zakarov is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Shakamutdinov has managed to escape the submission attempt.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Zakarov tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
The referee warns Shakamutdinov that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Well Zakarov has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
