PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Diego Gaspar (ranked 1638 p4p, 79 weight class) and Andre Clay (ranked 3404 p4p, 159 weight class). Clay has chosen Believe as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. There are an array of beautiful celebrities at ringside tonight! I wonder if any of them paid for their tickets.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Diego Gaspar!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Andre Clay!
The judges for this bout are Wesley Smith, George Francis and Gwen Towbar.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gaspar uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Clay.

Gaspar clinches up against the cage.
Clay throws an elbow but it misses.

Gaspar manages to pull guard.

Gaspar working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Clay doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Clay manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Gaspar lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Gaspar wants to control from the top but Clay keeps moving.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Gaspar won't allow Clay to sweep him here.

Clay working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Gaspar doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Gaspar manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Gaspar trying to control the position from guard on top but Clay is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Clay is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Gaspar stands and throws Clay's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Clay sneaks back into half guard.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Clay is doing well to avoid being mounted. He's controlling the position at the moment.

Gaspar is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Clay is concentrating on defense, preventing Gaspar from advancing position.
Clay trying to control but Gaspar postures up.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Clay is pressing down on Gaspar's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Gaspar wants to control from the top but Clay keeps moving.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Clay is pulling down on Gaspar's head. It's preventing any offense from Gaspar, at least for the moment.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Gaspar stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Clay swivels though and keeps the full guard.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Clay.
Gaspar manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!
Clay is staying active underneath Gaspar, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Clay is looking to escape.
Clay wants to get back to full guard.

Gaspar wants to free his trapped foot but Clay is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Clay desperately trying to maintain half guard.

Clay felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.

Gaspar is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Clay defends it well.
Gaspar wants to control but Clay is keeping him busy.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Clay gets back to full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Diego Gaspar will probably get the nod.

Clay misses with a right hand
and Gaspar makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.
Jab, jab by Clay - just one landing.
Clay throws the left hand but Gaspar avoids the punch easily.

Clay gets tackled into the cage by Gaspar. Gaspar maintains the clinch.
Clay can't find room to land a body shot as Gaspar controls the action.

Clay breaks the clinch.
Gaspar tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Clay misses with an uppercut.
Clay throws a good cross that connects.
Gaspar moves out of range of the body kick from Clay.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Clay throws an overhand right that lands on Gaspar's shoulder, as Gaspar tries to avoid the shot.
Gaspar takes a jab right on the kisser.
Gaspar looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
Gaspar slips a straight right by Clay.

Clay shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Clay was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Andre Clay has got the better of the ground game so far.

Gaspar is looking for a sweep.
Clay wants to lay and pray for a moment but Gaspar keeps working.
Gaspar struggling a bit here.
Gaspar is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Clay tries to stand but his hand is stuck under Gaspar.
Gaspar is staying active underneath Clay, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Gaspar is not content to let Clay control the position.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Gaspar moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Gaspar is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Clay has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Clay passes easily into side control. Nice work.
Gaspar wants to control but Clay postures up.

Gaspar is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Clay is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
Gaspar is not content to let Clay control the position.
Gaspar manages to work his way to half guard, despite Clay's best efforts.
Clay is nestled in close to Gaspar, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

Gaspar is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Clay pulls his head out easily.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Clay is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Gaspar sees it coming and defends easily.
Gaspar has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Clay is working away from the top position though.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Gaspar wants to control but instead he gets his guard passed and Clay is now in half guard.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Clay lands a nice short elbow.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Andre Clay showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!


Clay scores with a sloppy right hand. Gaspar should have avoided that one.
Clay looks to score with a jab to the body but Gaspar is just out of range.
Clay works the jab nicely.
Clay throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Gaspar sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Clay sizes up Gaspar with a pawing jab and scores with a straight right down the middle.

Clay closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Gaspar quickly recovers to half guard.
Clay seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.

Clay is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

Gaspar is looking to improve his position.

Clay is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.
Gaspar wants to improve his position but Clay is controlling well.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
You can see the frustration on Gaspar's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Clay tries to move into full mount but can't pass Gaspar's legs.
Clay cracks Gaspar with a big right hand but Gaspar just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.
Clay cracks Gaspar with an elbow. That is naaassty.
Gaspar tries to improve position but can't.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Clay wants to lay and pray for a moment but Gaspar keeps working.
Gaspar is positioning himself to get back to half guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
Andre Clay comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Clay has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Andre Clay decided to hype himself up post fight. It was going well but he went on about it a bit too long and the crowd turned on him a little.
