Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Wally Backman (ranked 5970 p4p, 256 weight class) and Tadakatsu Honda (ranked 22199 p4p, 339 weight class). Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Wally Backman!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Tadakatsu Honda!
The judges for this bout are Wesley Smith, Tiny Johnson and Daniel Franklin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Honda stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Honda wants it to stay on the feet.

Honda clinches.
Honda comes over the top with an elbow. That landed flush.
Honda misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Backman.
Honda utilising his Muay Thai to score with a knee to the body.
Backman takes a knee to the side of the body.
Honda unloads a knee to the mid-section.
Kneeeeees! The crowd are calling for knees to the body. Honda obliges.
Honda using the Thai clinch to land knees to the body.
Honda tries a body shot but Backman blocks it.
Honda scores a nice knee to the body.
Honda presses Backman against the cage and delivers a mid-strength body shot.
Backman looking for a takedown.
Honda is pressed up against the cage. Backman has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Honda down to the mat. Honda avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Wally Backman. That's going to take a lot out of him.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Honda is looking to stand up but Backman isn't so interested in that idea.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Backman wants to control from the top but Honda keeps moving.
Backman is in close to Honda's body, working some short punches and elbows.
Backman has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Honda is trying to keep Backman in close.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Honda fails with an attempt to clinch.

Honda takes the fight into the clinch.
Backman is trying to drag Honda to the mat but Honda just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.
Backman has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Honda is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Honda landing knees to the body. They look like they could hurt.
We've been informed that Honda has been working hard on his conditioning in the buildup to the fight.
Honda unloads a knee to the mid-section. Backman lets out a prehistoric sounding urrrrgh.

Honda works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.
Backman doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.
Honda missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Backman bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Honda's guard.

Backman is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Backman sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Honda's guard.
Honda is looking to improve his position.
Honda wants to get back to full guard but Backman has passed into side control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Tadakatsu Honda dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Backman fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Honda wants to clinch up but Backman keeps it at a distance.

and Backman counters with a nice double leg into side control. Honda won't be happy with that.

Backman is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Honda knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Backman takes a little break here. Honda wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.

Backman goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Honda has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Backman but great work by Honda.
Honda postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.

Honda has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.
Honda wants to clinch up but Backman keeps it at a distance.
Honda misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
The sound of bone on bone echoes around the arena as Honda checks a leg kick.
Honda pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Jab, jab by Honda - just one landing.
Honda is looking to clinch but Backman is avoiding it.

Honda darts in and clinches Backman up against the cage.
Honda lands a nice elbow.
Honda putting his Muay Thai to good use. He has Backman in a tight clinch and is doing some damage with knees to the body.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Backman ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Backman no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

Honda must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Honda is on the wrong end of a couple of strikes there.

Honda tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Backman manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Honda is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Wally Backman overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Backman perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Backman working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. And we move into the final round!

The referee asks Backman politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Backman prefers to stall for the moment though.
Backman wants to lay and pray for a moment but Honda keeps working.
