PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Bobby Lashley (ranked 4796 p4p, 0 weight class) and Joe James (ranked 7717 p4p, 0 weight class). Lashley comes to the cage accompanied by Fire & Brimstone . James has chosen Last Resort as his entrance music. Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Bobby Lashley!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Joe James!
The judges for this bout are Roosa Järviläinen, Ben Zyskovitsi and Matti Vanhoillinen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Excellent takedown into side control there by James.
Lashley tries to buck James off but James is having none of it.

James stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Lashley throws a combination but it was largely blocked by James.
Lashley changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. James tries to avoid it but Lashley manages to keep hold of a leg and drag James to the ground. James escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
As Lashley backs off James throws a huge counter combo but Lashley manages to avoid it all.

Lashley gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows James to score an easy takedown into full guard.
James controlling from the top position.

Lashley looking to control.
James is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

Lashley is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and James defends well.
James keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Lashley's head.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Lashley is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Lashley is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
James landing with the ground and pound.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

James walks into a left hand.
James tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Lashley defends well and James ends up having to push Lashley into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.

James has Lashley up against the cage in a clinch.

James jumps guard.
Lashley might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
James pulls Lashley in close to prevent any damage.
James is looking to stand up but Lashley isn't so interested in that idea.

James has control of Lashley's left arm, preventing Lashley from doing any damage.
Lashley looking to sit in guard and control but James gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Lashley is trying to control the position but James postures up.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
James lands a couple of digs.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.



Lashley tries to keep at a distance but James has taken the fight into the clinch.
James tries to break the clinch but Lashley is controlling the position.
James is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Lashley is stalling here.
James misses with a hook to the ribs.
Lashley blocks a body shot from James.
James jumps guard but Lashley stands there with James around his waist. James gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
James misses with a body punch.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Lashley escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
James has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

James closes the distance and pushes Lashley back into the cage.
Lashley avoiding damage as James throws knees to the body.
James misses with a short punch on the inside.

Lashley throws an elbow but it's blocked.
James throws a punch but it's blocked by Lashley.
James tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Lashley smiles and moves away.
James tries a head kick but it misses.
James keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
James fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Lashley avoids it really well and circles away.
Bobby Lashley has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Joe James.

James takes the fight into the clinch.
Lashley stalling.

James has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Lashley avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
James is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
A short right from Lashley.
James tries to pull guard but Lashley holds him up against the cage and eventually James drops back down to his feet.
James tries to land a knee to the head but Lashley blocks with his arms.

James works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.

Lashley has managed to wall walk up one of the corner posts to get back to his feet. James is pushing him up against the cage, looking to control the position.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Lashley is looking to break free of the clinch but James has double underhooks.

James is trying to trip Lashley. He has hold of a leg but Lashley is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. James persists though and gets the takedown into guard.

Lashley wants to sweep but no luck.
Lashley lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if James can do anything to dispel that myth.

Lashley gets to his feet. James looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
Lashley keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.

James is looking to stand up but Lashley won't let him.

Lashley had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. James defends it easily.
Lashley keeping moving, preventing James from controlling successfully.

James is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Lashley is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Lashley has escaped and now he's on top!

Lashley is pushing down on James's leg trying to pass to half guard. James is fighting to maintain full guard but Lashley has managed to sneak the leg through.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Bobby Lashley will probably get the nod.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!

James not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Lashley is standing up over James. James looks to escape but Lashley dives into side control.
James can't do much from the bottom here.
James tries to slip a leg under to move to half guard but Lashley presses down on the leg and jumps into full mount!
James really wants to buck Lashley off and get back to his feet.
Lashley with a couple of short strikes.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
James tries to hold on but Lashley postures up.

Lashley with shots to the head and body - James looks very uncomfortable down there.
Lashley looking to finish James with some ground and pound. This is bad for James!

James swinging wildly from the bottom but he's not landing.

James slips a leg in and gets back to half guard.
James is concentrating on defense, preventing Lashley from advancing position.
Lashley stalling away here and it's allowed James to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard.
James wants to get back to his feet but Lashley is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
James wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.

James working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Lashley doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Lashley manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
James takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
James bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Lashley's guard.
