PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Michael Sanna (ranked 885 p4p, 132 weight class) and Todd Rumper (ranked 3551 p4p, 461 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the light heavyweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Michael Sanna!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Todd Rumper!
The judges for this bout are Mauricio Rocha, Daniel Cesar and Paulo Santos.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sanna swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Sanna feints and then cracks Rumper's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Rumper down.
Sanna swings wildly with a hook that is half blocked by Rumper.
Sanna misses with a wild combination.
Rumper throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Sanna rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Rumper moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Rumper ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Rumper misses the shot to the body.
Nice body punch from Sanna.
A slapping leg kick lands for Sanna.
Rumper uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Sanna.
Rumper lands with an uppercut that bounces Sanna off the cage and back into range.
Sanna misses with a hook.
It seemed like Rumper was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it.
Sanna throws a head kick that misses.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Rumper works the jab nicely.
An inside leg kick from Rumper misses.
Rumper swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Sanna jabs Rumper right on the nose. Rumper blinks but takes it well.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Sanna lands a nice leg kick that just misses Rumper's sensitive parts.
Sanna swinging wildly here.
Wow, both these guys are really going for it!

Rumper drops Sanna with a left and a right! Oh, Sanna is hurt - Rumper dives into side control looking to finish!


Sanna is rocked!

Rumper is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Sanna is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Oh Sanna is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Sanna tries to control the position but he's not in luck - Rumper easily slips into full mount!

Rumper has hold of Sanna's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Sanna manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
Sanna seems to have got his legs back now.
Sanna is not a happy chappy… he wants out of there.
Rumper avoids the attempt from Sanna to control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Rumper jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Sanna is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Sanna and Rumper has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.

Rumper working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Sanna wants to control but Rumper postures up.
Sanna is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Rumper is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

Rumper is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Sanna knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Sanna is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Rumper prevents Sanna from escaping the position.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Rumper is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Sanna is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Sanna is looking for a sweep.
Sanna is working hard here to advance position.

Rumper wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Sanna, who protects the arm well.
Sanna struggling a bit here.

Rumper tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Sanna definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight.
Sanna is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Sanna makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Sanna.
Rumper seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Sanna looking to hit a scissor sweep but Rumper is one step ahead there.
Rumper looking to sit in guard and control but Sanna gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Sanna controlling from the top position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Todd Rumper dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Sanna throws a nice outside leg kick.
A solid body kick from Sanna.
Sanna lands a front kick.
We are yet to see a takedown attempt from Rumper in the fight. On paper you would think he is the more dominant ground fighter so let's see if these unusual tactics pay off.
Sanna fakes the leg kick and cracks Rumper in the body.
Rumper throws a hook to the side of Sanna's head but Sanna sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.

Sanna drops Rumper with a beautiful combination! Rumper stares up at his opponent, who ushers him back to his feet - Sanna is looking for the KO!


It looks like Todd Rumper has been cut.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
A looping hook to the body misses from Rumper. Sanna does a little dance to reset his feet.
Rumper takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.
Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Sanna.
Sanna lands a brutal head kick. Rumper looks out on his feet and Sanna throws more strikes until the ref is forced to stop the fight!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:43 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Kick and Punches). Michael Sanna!
Michael Sanna retains his light heavyweight title!
