PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Finn Balor (ranked 4503 p4p, 351 weight class) and Baeddan MacAuliffe (ranked 4671 p4p, 363 weight class). Balor comes into the arena with Monster blaring out of the sound system. MacAuliffe has chosen Notorious by Duran Duran as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 37 - 21 - 1, fighting out of St Petersburg, Finn Balor!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 13 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Baeddan MacAuliffe!
The judges for this bout are Arvi Lind, Roosa Järviläinen and Tarja Halkonen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

A momentary lapse in concentration from Balor enables MacAuliffe to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Balor manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

MacAuliffe is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Balor is looking for a sweep. MacAuliffe is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Balor is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of MacAuliffe's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take MacAuliffe's back!

Balor is trying to maintain the position but MacAuliffe is very close to passing his half guard.
Balor is in a bad position, trying to hold on for dear life but he is really struggling to maintain any sort of control.

Balor is looking for a sweep. MacAuliffe is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
MacAuliffe winds up and cracks Balor with a swinging punch to the side of the head.

MacAuliffe looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
MacAuliffe wants to take a breather but Balor is having none of it.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

MacAuliffe is looking for a kimura here.

MacAuliffe is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Baeddan MacAuliffe dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Balor turns his hip over beautifully as he lands a nice leg kick.
MacAuliffe tries to bum rush Balor with a series of wild strikes but Balor uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

Baeddan MacAuliffe is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
MacAuliffe throws a head kick but Balor moves out of range.
An attempted straight right counter from Balor misses the target.
MacAuliffe shoots in for a double leg but Balor sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
MacAuliffe throws a series of punches but Balor moves out of range.
Balor was looking to counter that move with a punch but didn't quite pull the trigger.
MacAuliffe has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Balor defends well against a solid takedown attempt from MacAuliffe.
Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Balor.

Balor drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.

MacAuliffe has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Balor can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Balor has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Balor accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

That was a close second round but I would say that Finn Balor will probably get the nod.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!



MacAuliffe shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Balor is trying to defend but MacAuliffe finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Oh Balor is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!

MacAuliffe fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Balor avoids it really well and circles away.

Balor scores with a big left there. The judges will like that one.

Balor shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in MacAuliffe's guard.

MacAuliffe bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Balor's guard.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Finn Balor.
I think Balor has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
