PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Ivan Koloff (ranked 6020 p4p, 0 weight class) and Slava Kychenkov (ranked 6017 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Slava Kychenkov!
The judges for this bout are Illya Tyunina, Vladimir Khabensky and Sergei Dronov.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Koloff leaves Kychenkov with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Kychenkov shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Koloff as he jumps to the side.
Koloff throws a big counter combination but Kychenkov scrambles out of danger and avoids any damage.
Kychenkov on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Koloff. Koloff obviously looking to wear him down.

Kychenkov closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Let's hope that Kychenkov has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Koloff is looking for a sweep.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Koloff is looking to regain half guard here but Kychenkov keeps moving and retains side control.
Kychenkov remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.
It looks like Kychenkov might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Kychenkov is continuing to stall.
Kychenkov really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Koloff. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
We're seeing a lot of stalling here from Kychenkov.

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.

Koloff will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Kychenkov shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Koloff sprawls well. Koloff wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Kychenkov gets slowly back to his feet.
The step up in weight doesn't seem to be a problem for Kychenkov. He's performing admirably here against the bigger man.
Koloff tries to bum rush Kychenkov with a series of wild strikes but Kychenkov uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Koloff lands with a kick to the temple. Kychenkov shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?"

The referee asks Kychenkov politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Kychenkov prefers to stall for the moment though.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Kychenkov shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Koloff pinned against the cage. Koloff gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Kychenkov is defended easily by Koloff.
Ivan Koloff has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Slava Kychenkov.

Nice takedown defense from Koloff. No joy for Kychenkov on that attempt.

Kychenkov changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Koloff tries to avoid it but Kychenkov manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Koloff to the ground. Koloff escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Slava Kychenkov seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Koloff lands with a head kick! That's gotta hurt.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Koloff has his foot on Kychenkov's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Kychenkov works his way back into a safe position though.

That was a close second round but I would say that Ivan Koloff will probably get the nod.
