PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Ruben Nevez (ranked 1101 p4p, 131 weight class) and Thomas Wid (ranked 1620 p4p, 197 weight class). Wid has chosen YNW Melly - Murder On My MInd as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. The key to victory for Ruben Nevez has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 1 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Ruben Nevez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 2 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Thomas Wid!
The judges for this bout are Peter Branson, Santiago Holmes and Dirk Anderson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
The fighters circling - Wid throws out the jab but it was never going to land.

Wid closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Nevez is trying to stand up here but Wid is controlling him well.
Nevez pushes Wid off but Wid dives into side control.
Nevez pushes Wid away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Wid gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Nevez seems to be moving with more speed, compared to his last bout. He must have been working on that in the gym.

Wid feints and as Nevez raises his hands in defense, Wid changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Wid stands up over Nevez, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Wid controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Nevez wants to stand and escape but Wid is having none of it.
Nevez knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Wid on the ground.
Wid seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Wid has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Nevez wants to stand but Wid is controlling the position.

Wid lands a couple of decent looking shots.
Nevez has momentary wrist control but Wid slips an elbow through the middle.
Nevez on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Nevez tries to get out of the position.
Wid is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Wid's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
Wid makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.

Wid is standing up over Nevez. Nevez looks to escape but Wid dives into side control.

Wid is putting a hurting on Nevez here, landing some big shots from side control.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Wid thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Wid is working Nevez over with some ground and pound from side control.
Nevez is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Wid asserts his dominance and retains side control.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Nevez sneaks out the side door and pushes Wid away - he's back to his feet. The crowd show their appreciation for the escape.

Wid shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Nevez sprawls well. Nevez wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Wid gets slowly back to his feet.
Nevez swung with a counter right hand that didn't connect.
Nevez uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Wid.
Wid walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush.


It looks like Thomas Wid has been cut.
Wid's coach down at Island Safe Space was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on Wid's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight.

Nevez rushes Wid and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Nevez scores with an uppercut up the middle.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Nevez lands a right hand.
Nevez gets through Wid's defenses to land a nice punch to the side of the head.
A right hook to the body lands for Nevez.
Nevez lands with a short shot to the head.
Wid fails to land with a short punch on the inside.

Nevez's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Nevez sends Wid crashing to the mat with a devastating uppercut! Nevez is motioning to the referee to let Wid up. He wants to try and finish this one on the feet!


Wid is rocked!
Nevez throws a pinpoint strike between Wid's hands that connects right on the jaw and sends Wid crashing to the floor! He's out before he even hits the mat and Nevez scores a great knockout victory!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:56 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Ruben Nevez!
Ruben Nevez decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way.
