Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Derek Payne (ranked 532 p4p, 52 weight class) and Vick Venom (ranked 731 p4p, 80 weight class). Venom has chosen Once bitten twice shy-by CINDERELLA as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Vick Venom!
The judges for this bout are Gwen Towbar, Cecil Peabody and Frank Dennis.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Payne defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Venom.
Venom shoots in for a double leg but Payne sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Venom scores with a hook to the body. Payne takes a step back and tries to catch his breath.

Payne has Venom up against the cage in a clinch.
Payne goes for a body shot but it's blocked.
Venom is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Payne gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.
Derek Payne has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Vick Venom.
Still in the clinch, Payne scores with a nice short uppercut.

Venom jumps guard and drags Payne to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Venom is trying to control the position but Payne postures up.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Payne continues to stall.
Payne stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Venom swivels though and keeps the full guard.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Venom can do anything to dispel that myth.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Venom is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Venom seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Payne wants to take advantage of his opponent's missed offense by moving into the clinch.
Venom's hands are dropping dangerously low here and Payne connects clean with a right hook that sends him down to one knee! Venom scrambles back to his feet.

Payne fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Venom manages to avoid it.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Payne knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Venom on the ground.
