Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Avila Alvarez (ranked 6135 p4p, 539 weight class) and Phil Arcuri (ranked 3221 p4p, 337 weight class). Alvarez's entrance music is Barbarian by The Darkness. A fine choice. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 18 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Phil Arcuri!
The judges for this bout are Chris Downing, Daniel Franklin and Robert Twigg.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Arcuri chopping away at his opponent's legs.
A nice inside leg kick there by Arcuri. That's going to slow Alvarez down.
Alvarez throws a head kick but Arcuri moves out of range.
Arcuri appears to be waiting to throw a counter punch to the body.
We've been informed that Arcuri has been sparring a lot of Muay Thai in the buildup to this fight so let's see if that has an impact on the result.
Arcuri shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Alvarez as he avoids it easily.
Alvarez shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Arcuri sprawls well. Arcuri wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Alvarez gets slowly back to his feet.
Arcuri takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Alvarez's corner calls for a 1-2. Alvarez obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.

Arcuri throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Alvarez was looking to counter that move with a punch but didn't quite pull the trigger.

Alvarez takes a jab on the nose. He smiles like he loves it and keeps coming.

Arcuri gets caught flat footed, as Alvarez shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.

Arcuri working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Alvarez doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Alvarez manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Arcuri is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Alvarez lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
Alvarez will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Alvarez is in close to Arcuri's body, working some short punches and elbows.
Alvarez has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Arcuri has his foot on Alvarez's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Alvarez works his way back into a safe position though.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.

Alvarez has a momentary lapse of concentration, allowing Arcuri to throw up a leg and lock on what appears to be a pretty tight triangle! Alvarez is fighting it off but it's all too little too late - Arcuri pulls down on the head and he's put Alvarez to sleep! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:59 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Phil Arcuri!
After winning the bout, Phil Arcuri thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
Avila Alvarez spoke after the fight, saying 'I'm so pissed, man. I trained so hard for this camp too.'.
