And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.

The judges for this bout are Gwen Towbar, Frank Dennis and Stewart Dunkirk.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smith lands a right hook to the body.
Smith throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.

Smith has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Kirk is proving hard to escape from.

Smith is looking for a triangle but Kirk pushes his legs off easily.
Kirk wants to get up but he can't break Smith's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Smith is trying to control but Kirk passes into side control!

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Smith can do anything to dispel that myth.

Kirk gets to mount! Smith was on the offensive and wasn't defending properly.
Smith tries to control Kirk's body but Kirk pushes him off. Smith squirms to his side and now Kirk has his back!

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Kirk is remaining active here, looking for the choke. The more discerning members of the crowd will appreciate his efforts.
Kirk is trying to stick to Smith's back but Smith is turning into Kirk. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Kirk's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Smith.

Smith decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Kirk, up you get!

Smith dives in and scores a takedown into Kirk's guard.
Kirk really is a fat lump.
Kirk can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Smith controls the pace.
Smith wanted to stand there but Kirk had control of the position.

Kirk is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.

Smith has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Kirk can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Wilson Kirk overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Kirk scores with a couple of good hammerfists.
Smith has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Kirk is working away from the top position though.

Smith shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Kirk napping and manages to drive through into side control!

Kirk throws his opponent off and manages to get back to his feet! Nicely done!
Shad Smith seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Kirk dives in and grabs Smith's left leg, looking for a takedown. Smith pushes down on Kirk's head and hops out.
Smith wants to clinch up but Kirk keeps it at a distance.
Kirk tries to counter by clinching up but Smith breaks away and moves out of range.
Smith throws out a loose jab but Kirk uses good head movement to avoid it.

Smith changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Kirk looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Kirk pushes Smith away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Smith gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.

Smith goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Kirk has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Smith but great work by Kirk.

Kirk wants to control but Smith is keeping him busy.
