PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Brian Roper (ranked 2721 p4p, 313 weight class) and Leonardo Florentino Ernesto Alvarez (ranked 2506 p4p, 290 weight class). Leonardo Florentino Ernesto Alvarez told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 14 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Brian Roper!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 32 - 15 - 1, fighting out of Las Vegas, Leonardo Florentino Ernesto Alvarez!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Franklin, Frank Dennis and Gwen Towbar.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Roper scores with a punch to the head.
Roper throws a hook but Alvarez avoids it easily.
Roper waving his hands out in front of him, looking to distract Alvarez.
Alvarez with the counter takedown but Roper avoids it easily.
Roper stuffs the takedown attempt from Alvarez. Alvarez gets slowly back to his feet.
Roper throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.

Alvarez drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.

Roper is working an open guard so Alvarez takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.

Alvarez looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Alvarez shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Roper is trying to defend but Alvarez finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Alvarez shoots in and bounces Roper off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Alvarez winds up and cracks Roper with a swinging punch to the side of the head.

Roper is looking for a sweep. Alvarez is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Alvarez is looking to take a break and control but Roper is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Roper's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Alvarez fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Roper throws a shot from downtown. Alvarez moves away and avoids it.
Alvarez shoots for a double leg takedown but Roper sprawls well. He's pushed Alvarez's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Roper is looking to counter punch.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
The fighters circling - Roper throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Roper scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Alvarez doesn't seem bothered though.
Alvarez shoots for a takedown but Roper saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

Roper is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Roper is looking to stand back up but Alvarez counters by passing into half guard. Oops... bit sloppy there by Roper.

Alvarez takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Roper is trying to control but Alvarez manages to pass to mount!

Alvarez pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.
Alvarez lands a couple of good shots and Roper has given up his back, trying to escape the position!

Alvarez scores with some strikes to the side of the head there. Good, points scoring shots.
Alvarez lands with a nice looking elbow that stuns Roper.

Alvarez has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Alvarez is remaining active here, looking for the choke. The more discerning members of the crowd will appreciate his efforts.
Alvarez has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Alvarez keeps control of the position easily here as Roper tries to buck him off.
