PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Kaplan Temrezov (ranked 6541 p4p, 0 weight class) and Victor Stroev (ranked 6997 p4p, 0 weight class). Victor Stroev told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 11 - 1, fighting out of St Petersburg, Kaplan Temrezov!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Victor Stroev!
The judges for this bout are Dmitry Maklakov, Viktor Lagutenko and Vladimir Khabensky.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
The fight stays on the outside here - Temrezov looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
A decent looking body kick lands there for Stroev.

Temrezov closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Stroev did well to prevent Temrezov getting side control.

Stroev kicks Temrezov off and gets back to his feet.
Temrezov shoots in looking for a takedown. Stroev tries to sprawl out of it but Temrezov keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Stroev manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Temrezov shoots in for a double leg but Stroev sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Temrezov gets off balance looking for a body kick

and Stroev holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Temrezov gets underhooks to prevent Stroev's takedown attempt.
Stroev drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Temrezov gets the underhooks and prevents it.
Stroev blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Stroev manages to break the clinch.
Stroev stuffs the takedown.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Kaplan Temrezov. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Temrezov throws a series of punches but Stroev avoids them all with ease.
Stroev looks for a takedown but Temrezov sprawls well.

Temrezov instigates a clinch.
Stroev is trying to drag Temrezov to the mat but Temrezov just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.

Temrezov pulls Stroev into guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Stroev tries to stand but Temrezov is controlling from the bottom.
Temrezov wants to control but instead he gets his guard passed and Stroev is now in half guard.
Nice strikes from Stroev there.
Stroev seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Temrezov does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Temrezov is looking for a sweep. Stroev is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Stroev slows the pace down in half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Temrezov has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Stroev is working away from the top position though.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Stroev tries to stand but his arm is trapped.
Still in half guard, Stroev seems content to control.
Temrezov knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Stroev on the ground.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Temrezov leaves Stroev with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Temrezov changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Stroev looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Stroev is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Temrezov has just dragged him back down to the mat.
Stroev manages to get back to half guard.
Temrezov stalling.
Stroev tries to kick Temrezov off but Temrezov keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!


Crunch! Temrezov slams his shin into Stroev's torso.
Stroev pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Stroev changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Temrezov tries to avoid it but Stroev manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Temrezov to the ground. Temrezov escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Temrezov drops down looking for a counter takedown but Stroev sprawls and moves away.

Stroev gets caught flat footed, as Temrezov shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Temrezov postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
Temrezov looking to sit in guard and control but Stroev gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Stroev content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.
Victor Stroev has got the better of the ground game so far.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Stroev seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

Temrezov is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Stroev defends well.

Stroev trying to control the position from guard on top but Temrezov is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Stroev postures up.
Stroev wants to control from the top but Temrezov keeps moving.
Temrezov wants to improve his position but instead Stroev has moved into half guard.
Temrezov is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Temrezov is in trouble now - Stroev has advanced to mount!
Stroev tries to control but Temrezov wriggling away.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Temrezov is wriggling around trying to escape.

Stroev is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But Temrezov has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from Temrezov!
Temrezov looking to sit in guard and control but Stroev gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Stroev forces his way into half guard.
Stroev is looking to take a break and control but Temrezov is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Stroev decides to stand up and try his luck on the feet.
Temrezov tries to clinch but Stroev is having none of it.
Stroev looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Temrezov is fending him off so far but Stroev persists. Nope, Temrezov circles away and we're back to standing.
Temrezov's corner calls for a 1, 2 combination and Temrezov duly obliges.
Stroev looks to land a body kick but Temrezov moved away.
Temrezov misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.

Temrezov closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Stroev to the mat! Stroev manages to get full guard.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Stroev is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Temrezov is aware though and is defending well.
Stroev is breathing heavily.
Stroev working a defensive guard here.
Temrezov postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Kaplan Temrezov will probably get the nod.
That's time! Temrezov's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. And we move into the final round!



Stroev gets a double leg takedown into Temrezov's guard.

Stroev is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Temrezov tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Stroev sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Temrezov's guard.
Stroev controlling the pace.

Temrezov pushes Stroev off but Stroev dives into side control.
Stroev wants to lay and pray for a moment but Temrezov keeps working.
Temrezov wants to get back to his feet.

Stroev working away.
Stroev advances to full mount.
Temrezov is in all sorts of trouble here.
Temrezov tries to hold on but Stroev postures up.
Stroev controlling from mount.
Temrezov is squirming around, avoiding Stroev's attempts to control the action.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Stroev working away from the top, dropping strikes.
Stroev trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Stroev avoids the attempt from Temrezov to control.
Stroev landing strikes, looking to finish!
Stroev content just to control the position here.

Stroev postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Temrezov looks a forlorn figure.
Stroev trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Stroev lands with some vicious ground and pound - can Temrezov hang on?

Stroev is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Temrezov to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Temrezov shrugs it off.

Temrezov is squirming around, avoiding Stroev's attempts to control the action.

Temrezov wants to control but Stroev is having none of it.
Stroev is looking to stand but Temrezov has his arms wrapped tightly around him, looking to prevent the damage.

Stroev looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.
Stroev takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Temrezov wants to hold on but Stroev pushes him away.
Stroev trying to control but Temrezov is having none of it.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Stroev is in the full mount, landing strikes.

And that's the end of the fight!
Victor Stroev comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Stroev has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
