Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Jimmy Carruthers (ranked 2793 p4p, 128 weight class) and Dan Sergeant (ranked 3637 p4p, 180 weight class). Dan Sergeant has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 12 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Jimmy Carruthers!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 18 - 16 - 1, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Dan Sergeant!
The judges for this bout are Yves DeLean, Trevor Gratis and William Peck.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sergeant checks a leg kick.

Sergeant throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Carruthers tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Sergeant is in Carruthers's guard.
Sergeant makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
Sergeant throws a big right hand that misses.

Carruthers looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Sergeant with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Sergeant's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
Sergeant tries to free his leg and advance position but Carruthers is retaining full guard.
Carruthers will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Sergeant lands a couple of decent looking shots.
Sergeant engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
Carruthers is looking to stand up but Sergeant isn't so interested in that idea.

Sergeant is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
It looks like Sergeant might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.
Carruthers working a defensive guard but Sergeant manages to pass into side control anyway.
Carruthers takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better.
Sergeant remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Carruthers wants to control but Sergeant postures up.

Sergeant is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Carruthers has escaped the position, nice work there.

Carruthers gives up the full mount - oops, sloppy defensive grappling there!

Sergeant has control of Carruthers's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Carruthers regains control of the situation pretty easily.
Carruthers can't escape the position.
Sergeant controlling the pace for now.
Sergeant has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
A nice elbow there by Sergeant.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.



Sergeant closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Carruthers's guard.
Sergeant is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
Sergeant is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Sergeant's corner. There ya go! There ya go!

Carruthers not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Sergeant content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.
Dan Sergeant has got the better of the ground game so far.
Carruthers trying to keep a closed guard but Sergeant is proving a slippery customer.
Carruthers knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Sergeant on the ground.
Sergeant's corner is telling him to maintain position.

Sergeant is continuing to stall.
Carruthers has his hands on Sergeant's head, controlling the position.
Carruthers wants to stand up but Sergeant is controlling him.

Sergeant working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Carruthers's head.

Sergeant pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Carruthers is keeping the position for now.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Sergeant landing with the ground and pound.
Sergeant has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Sergeant slips nicely into half guard.
Sergeant landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent.
Sergeant looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Carruthers with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.


Carruthers is rocked!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Sergeant connects with a nice short shot to Carruthers's temple.
Oh Carruthers is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!
Sergeant keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.
Sergeant moves into full mount! Carruthers won't be happy about that!

Carruthers is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Sergeant scores with a couple of good head shots there.
Sergeant cracks Carruthers with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
Sergeant postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Carruthers looks a forlorn figure.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Sergeant sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.
Sergeant connects with a bit shot that sees Carruthers covering up! More strikes from Sergeant and the referee jumps in to stop the fight! Sergeant is our winner by TKO!
