Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Shaun Sargent (ranked 4013 p4p, 525 weight class) and Manuel Vasquez (ranked 24063 p4p, 818 weight class). Manuel Vasquez will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Shaun Sargent!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Manuel Vasquez!
The judges for this bout are Ian Loll, Dillan Fox and Gregory Folan.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Vasquez gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Vasquez is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Vasquez wants to stand and escape but Sargent is having none of it.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Vasquez trying to keep a closed guard but Sargent is proving a slippery customer.
Vasquez wants to control the position but Sargent says "no thanks buddy" and passes to half guard.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Sargent decides to stand and escape the position.

Vasquez looks for a takedown but Sargent sprawls well.
Vasquez shoots for a double leg takedown but Sargent sprawls well. He's pushed Vasquez's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

and Sargent holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.

Sargent escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Vasquez must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Sargent looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Sargent is looking for a kimura but Vasquez is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Sargent to get the leverage.

Sargent takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Vasquez wants to get back to his feet.

Sargent seems to be looking for submissions.
Sargent tries to pass to full mount but Vasquez defends it.

Vasquez misses with some strikes from the bottom.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Vasquez throws a push kick but Sargent slaps the foot to one side.
Vasquez lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Vasquez throws a body kick, spinning off balance

so Sargent counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.

Vasquez kicks Sargent off and gets to his feet.
Sargent is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Vasquez can do to turn this around?

A momentary lapse in concentration from Vasquez enables Sargent to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Vasquez manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Vasquez is striking from the bottom but Sargent uses the opportunity to pass into half guard.
Vasquez is trying to get back to full guard.
Shaun Sargent overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Sargent throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Sargent seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Vasquez does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Sargent's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
Vasquez wants to sweep but Sargent has passed to side control!

Sargent wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Vasquez, who protects the arm well.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
An elbow from Sargent crashes against the mat.
Vasquez is trying to improve his position.
Sargent fails to land a wild elbow strike.
Sargent looking to punish the body of his opponent here but Vasquez is avoiding damage well.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Sargent stands up.

Sargent rushes Vasquez and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Vasquez tries to keep at a distance but Sargent has taken the fight into the clinch.

Sargent ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Sargent no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

Vasquez makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.

Sargent has his feet on Vasquez's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.
Vasquez shoots in but no luck this time.
Vasquez dives in and grabs Sargent's left leg, looking for a takedown. Sargent pushes down on Vasquez's head and hops out.
Vasquez closes this distance looking for a takedown but Sargent circles away.
Shaun Sargent has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Manuel Vasquez.

Vasquez has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Sargent is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

Sargent keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Vasquez's efforts to push away.

Shaun Sargent is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Well Sargent has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
