PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Riley Roth (ranked 8703 p4p, 0 weight class) and Guigo Bruno (ranked 5952 p4p, 0 weight class). Bruno is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Na segunda vinda. Fingers crossed for an exciting fight - I'm sure both fighters are looking for a nice under the table bonus!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Guigo Bruno!
The judges for this bout are Edson Gomes, Seu Braga and Luis Engracia.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Roth gets a takedown into half guard.
Roth trying to control the action but Bruno is working from the bottom.
Bruno keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Roth thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.

Bruno is looking to control Roth's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Bruno avoid being mounted?
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Roth tries to stand and escape but Bruno is controlling the position.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Roth connects with a nice short shot to Bruno's temple.

Bruno is trying to stand up here but Roth is controlling him well.
Well, if Roth is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

Roth seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Bruno does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Roth will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Bruno is staying active underneath Roth, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Roth is taking a breather. Bruno says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

Roth is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Bruno sees it coming and defends easily.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Roth tries to stand but can't do so whilst Bruno controls his leg.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Bruno is looking for a sweep. Roth is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Roth seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Bruno does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Bruno is looking to improve his position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Roth lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.

Bruno is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Roth seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A telegraphed takedown attempt from Bruno is defended easily by Roth.
Roth tries to clinch but Bruno moves out of range.

Bruno closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Roth to the mat! Roth manages to get full guard.
Bruno tries to free his leg and advance position but Roth is retaining full guard.
Roth lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Riley Roth has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Guigo Bruno.
Come on Roth - let's have some action - none of this stalling nonsense.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Bruno manages to break the clinch.
Bruno shoots in but Roth avoids the takedown attempt easily.

Roth clinches up with Bruno and pushes him back against the cage.
Bruno tries to pull guard but Roth forces him back to his feet, against the cage.
Roth blocks a punch to the side of the head.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Roth breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Roth is looking to clinch but Bruno is avoiding it.

Bruno drives through and clinches with Roth against the cage.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Guigo Bruno showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!


Bruno changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Roth tries to avoid it but Bruno manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Roth to the ground. Roth escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Roth tried to counter with a leg kick but Bruno avoided it.

Roth shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Bruno manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

Roth lands a couple of decent looking shots.
Roth wants to control from the top but Bruno keeps moving.
Roth slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Bruno is on top in guard.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Bruno escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Roth gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Roth got a little sloppy there for a moment and Bruno has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Roth has managed to get both his arms back between Bruno's legs - danger averted.
Roth distracts Bruno with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Bruno is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Roth sitting in guard, not really doing much.
Roth working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Roth wants to control from the top but Bruno keeps moving.
Bruno is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Riley Roth.
Well Roth has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
