PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Shayne Velez (ranked 7890 p4p, 0 weight class) and Steven Charlton (ranked 23944 p4p, 0 weight class). Velez has a slight injury, which hopefully won't affect the fight too much. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Shayne Velez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Steven Charlton!
The judges for this bout are , Jack Bonds and Don Winkell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Velez gets caught napping as Charlton dives in and scores a takedown. Velez manages to retain guard.
Charlton connects with a couple of short punches.
Velez being controlled here, momentarily.
Velez is breathing heavily.
Let's hope that Charlton has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
It looks like Charlton might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.
Velez could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
We're seeing a lot of stalling here from Charlton.

Charlton postures up.
Charlton slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Velez tries to clinch up

and Charlton decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Velez's guard.
Charlton stays in close to Velez's body and controls the position.
Charlton is pushing down on Velez's leg trying to pass to half guard. Velez is fighting to maintain full guard but Charlton has managed to sneak the leg through.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Charlton scores with a couple of good hammerfists.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Charlton in particular looking to stall.

Charlton tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Charlton has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Velez is working to avoid the ground and pound but Charlton connects with a decent elbow.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Charlton moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now.
Charlton lands a few punches from side control.
Charlton taking a breather here.

Charlton thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Charlton is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Velez's shoulder. That is not cool.
Charlton's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

Yet more stalling tactics from Charlton.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Charlton is continuing to stall.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Steven Charlton dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Charlton avoids the head kick by Velez.

Charlton fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Velez to the ground. Charlton is now in Velez's guard.
Charlton is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
Velez trying to keep a closed guard but Charlton is proving a slippery customer.
Charlton slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Charlton has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
More stalling from Charlton.

Charlton is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Charlton slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Charlton rushes Velez and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Charlton has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Velez is trying to keep an underhook but Charlton manages to get the takedown into half guard.
Velez tries to roll over but Charlton keeps him under control.
Charlton is taking a breather. Velez says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Charlton has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Velez is trying to control but can't.
Charlton working over Velez with some ground and pound. Velez looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
Charlton seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Velez has hold of Charlton's hands but Charlton slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
Charlton perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.

Velez is rocked!
Charlton scores with a couple of good hammerfists.
Oh Velez is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!

Charlton is working for a submission of some sort.
Charlton controlling the action here.
Charlton lands a big elbow - Velez is out of it! He's waving his arms around but his eyes are closed and he's not intelligently defending himself - the ref has no choice but to jump in and stop the fight! This one is in the books! A TKO win for Charlton!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:48 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Steven Charlton!
