PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Gandolf Schmidt (ranked 2979 p4p, 126 weight class) and Horris Hogan (ranked 4235 p4p, 159 weight class). Hogan has chosen Smoke on the water by DEEP PURPLE as his entrance music. Horris Hogan told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Gandolf Schmidt!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Horris Hogan!
The judges for this bout are Wesley Smith, Gwen Towbar and Frank Dennis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hogan pushing out the jab but it's not landing.
An attempted straight right counter from Schmidt misses the target.
Hogan uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Schmidt.
Hogan dives in and grabs Schmidt's left leg, looking for a takedown. Schmidt pushes down on Hogan's head and hops out.
Schmidt misses with an uppercut. Hogan saw that one coming.
Schmidt cracks Hogan with a right hand to the side of the head.


It looks like Horris Hogan has been cut.
Hogan slips under a jab from Schmidt.
Schmidt looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
Schmidt throws a hook to the side of Hogan's head but Hogan sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.

Hogan's coach down at BigIsland BigGuns Warrior Training was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on Hogan's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight.

Hogan takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.
Hogan cracks Schmidt with an open hand slap.
Schmidt has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Schmidt there as he acknowledges the shot.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Hogan shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Hogan throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Schmidt keeping control of the leg, stopping his opponent passing to mount.
Schmidt is trying to stand up here but Hogan is controlling him well.

Schmidt manages to get to full guard.
Schmidt is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Schmidt lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Schmidt decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Hogan tries for a takedown but Schmidt sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

Hogan ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Schmidt moves away.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Schmidt enables Hogan to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Schmidt manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Schmidt seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Schmidt has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
Schmidt bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Hogan's guard.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Schmidt is pushing down on Hogan's leg trying to pass to half guard. Hogan is fighting to maintain full guard but Schmidt has managed to sneak the leg through.
Schmidt uses his free foot to push down on Hogan's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Hogan.
Schmidt prevents Hogan from getting the reversal.
Hogan holds on to Schmidt as tight as he can, avoiding damage.
Schmidt content just to control the position here.
Schmidt continues to stall.
Hogan wants to hold on but Schmidt pushes him away.
Hogan is desperately trying to improve his position but Schmidt has a good base and remains in mount.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Hogan goes for a double leg but Schmidt avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Schmidt continues to drive forward.

Schmidt throws a hook to the side of Hogan's head but Hogan sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Hogan changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.
Hogan tries to score a power double leg takedown but Schmidt sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Hogan somewhat.
It looked like Schmidt wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Hogan takes a jab right on the kisser.
Hogan throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Schmidt's waist but Schmidt gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Hogan off to one side.
Schmidt is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Hogan can do to turn this around?

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Schmidt is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Hogan is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Schmidt pulls his head out easily.
Hogan has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Schmidt is working away from the top position though.
Schmidt will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Hogan can do anything to dispel that myth.

A telegraphed takedown attempt from Hogan is defended easily by Schmidt.

Well Schmidt has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
