The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Van Der Merwe throws a body kick that sends a sickening thudding noise reverberating around the arena.
Alexandre attempts a leg kick but it's missed by a good margin.
Nice sprawl there from Alexandre as Van Der Merwe shoots in.

Alexandre shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Alexandre showed some decent athleticism there.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Alexandre misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.
Van Der Merwe tries to lock up and control but Alexandre gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

Alexandre is working for the choke. He's slipped one arm under the chin. Van Der Merwe has to defend the other arm for all he's worth... but Alexandre has managed to get that arm free too and he's tightening the choke! Van Der Merwe taps out and looks absolutely disgusted with himself. Alexandre doesn't care though - he's delighted!
