PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Emilio Rojas (ranked 4772 p4p, 457 weight class) and Jan Paul Valens (ranked 1859 p4p, 221 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Emilio Rojas!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 12 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jan Paul Valens!
The judges for this bout are Paul Aken, Wagner Zegers and Aafke Stam.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Valens rushes Rojas and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

Rojas breaks from the clinch.
Rojas takes a swing at Valens's ribcage but misses.
Valens tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Valens misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Valens smiles there as he lands a nice right hand right on the button.
Rojas will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.
Valens only half commits to the counter leg kick.
Nice defenses there by Valens.
Rojas throws a hook but Valens avoids it easily.
Valens misses with a body kick.
It looked like Rojas wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit.
Rojas throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Valens sees it coming and avoids it easily.
A little jabbing left from Valens on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.

and Rojas counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Valens connects with a jab.
Rojas misses with a low kick.

Valens shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.

Rojas manages to wriggle out and sneak his way back up to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched up against the cage.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Rojas is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Valens is controlling him.

Rojas is in a tricky position. We've heard reports from his gym mates at Big Bear Fight Factory that he's been drilling escapes, so let's see if he can get back to his feet.
Valens postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Valens winds up and cracks Rojas with a swinging punch to the side of the head.

In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Valens working his ground and pound in the gym.

Rojas pushes Valens off looking to stand but Valens dives back in and keeps control.

Valens is looking to take a break and control but Rojas is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Rojas wants to get back to his feet.
Valens throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Rojas looks like he's trying to stand up.

Valens uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Rojas.

and Valens counters by moving into the clinch.
Rojas lands a shoulder strike that jolts his opponent's head backwards.

Valens has Rojas pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Rojas manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.

Valens lands a right hand.
Rojas using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Valens has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.
Rojas is trying to force a seperation but Valens has the dominant position.
Valens pushes Rojas back against the cage and lands a hook to the side of the head.
Valens is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Rojas pulls him back up using the underhooks.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Rojas does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy.

Valens uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Rojas.
Valens bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Valens.

Rojas throws an overhand right that lands on Valens's shoulder, as Valens tries to avoid the shot.

Valens keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Rojas's efforts to push away.

Valens is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Rojas would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

Valens is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Rojas is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

The referee asks Valens politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Valens prefers to stall for the moment though.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Emilio Rojas.
I think Valens has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
