PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Tom Papa (ranked 22496 p4p, 0 weight class) and Dokonjonosuke Ueda (ranked 25008 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Tom Papa!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Dokonjonosuke Ueda!
The judges for this bout are Yasuomi Hirokawa, Shigeki Sano and Shigeki Fujiwara.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Ueda tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Papa swivels and escapes.
Papa changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Ueda tries to avoid it but Papa manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Ueda to the ground. Ueda escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Papa keeps the fight on the outside.
Ueda just manages to avoid a counter high kick fromPapa.
Ueda is looking to clinch.
Papa throws a quick counter head kick but Ueda was just out of range.
Ueda throws a hook but Papa blocks it.
Ueda wants to clinch up but Papa keeps it at a distance.

Papa darts in and clinches Ueda up against the cage.
Ueda wants a takedown but no success here.
Papa fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Papa has had enough of the clinch but Ueda keeps him there for the moment.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Ueda is working for takedown but Papa is calmly controlling the position for now.
Tom Papa has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Dokonjonosuke Ueda.
Ueda is looking to break free of the clinch but Papa has double underhooks.

Papa seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Ueda for as long as he can get away with.

Papa has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Papa tries to free his leg and advance position but Ueda is retaining full guard.

Ueda looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
The fighters are starting to get sweaty, which will make takedowns a bit more tricky.
Ueda tries to clinch but Papa is having none of it.
Ueda dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Papa. That did some damage!

Papa stuffs the takedown attempt from Ueda. Ueda gets slowly back to his feet.
Papa seemed to be looking to counter by closing the distance.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Papa is defended easily by Ueda.
Papa looks to land a combination but Ueda avoids it well.
Ueda tries to clinch up

so Papa counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Papa is standing up over Ueda. Ueda looks to escape but Papa dives into side control.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Papa knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Ueda on the ground.
Papa wants to control but Ueda is keeping him busy.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Ueda shoots in but Papa avoids the takedown attempt easily.

Papa shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Papa was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Papa creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Ueda sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.
The ground and pound from Papa seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.

Well, if Papa is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

Papa seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Ueda does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Papa changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Ueda tries to avoid it but Papa manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Ueda to the ground. Ueda escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Papa pulls out of a head kick attempt.

Papa shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Ueda's guard.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Papa has Ueda pressed against the cage, preventing Ueda from circling away and getting back to striking at range.
Ueda misses with a shot to the kidneys.

Ueda has his foot on Papa's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Papa works his way back into a safe position though.
Ueda takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Papa tries to free his leg and advance position but Ueda is retaining full guard.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Ueda is on top in guard.

Papa has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Ueda has passed into side control.

I would just about give that final round to Dokonjonosuke Ueda.
Well Papa has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
