PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Maykol Yurk (ranked 2879 p4p, 0 weight class) and Boris Lukyanov (ranked 4593 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have solid standup skills and neither is particularly fantastic on the ground, so let's hope for a nice standup war!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 6 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Maykol Yurk!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 4 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Boris Lukyanov!
The judges for this bout are Winston Alpacca, Bart Greer and Daniel Franklin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Yurk tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Lukyanov manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Lukyanov displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Yurk.

Lukyanov feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Yurk not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Lukyanov looking to sit in guard and control but Yurk gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Yurk won't allow Lukyanov to sweep him here.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Yurk works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Lukyanov is not content to let Yurk control the position.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Lukyanov is refusing to be controlled, as Yurk sits in half guard.
Yurk throwing shots but Lukyanov is blocking nicely.
Lukyanov is looking to improve his position.
Lukyanov is not content to let Yurk control the position.
Yurk has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Lukyanov is refusing to be controlled, as Yurk sits in half guard.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Yurk content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Lukyanov shoots in looking for a takedown. Yurk tries to sprawl out of it but Lukyanov keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Yurk manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Yurk misses with a two punch combination.
Lukyanov throws a combination. Yurk tries to block but a couple of punches get through.
Lukyanov closes this distance looking for a takedown but Yurk circles away.
Yurk throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Yurk gets tackled into the cage by Lukyanov. Lukyanov maintains the clinch.
Lukyanov is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Yurk pulls him back up using the underhooks.
Maykol Yurk has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Boris Lukyanov.

Lukyanov breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Yurk shoots for a takedown but Lukyanov saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Lukyanov feints the counter takedown.
Yurk throws a body punch but Lukyanov moves out of range.
Yurk misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Lukyanov stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Lukyanov wants it to stay on the feet.
A nice side step and Lukyanov releases a counter shot to the body, but it doesn't find it's home.

Lukyanov moves into range and clinches up with Yurk.
Yurk has Lukyanov pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Lukyanov manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.
Yurk is breathing heavily.
Yurk is trying to force a seperation but Lukyanov has the dominant position.
Yurk jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Lukyanov walks away with a smile on his face. Yurk gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Lukyanov throws a quick head kick that skims the top of Yurk's head.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Boris Lukyanov dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Lukyanov shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Yurk but Yurk pushes him off and we're back to square one.
A counter left hand to the body from Yurk misses its target.
Yurk throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Lukyanov shoots in looking for a takedown but Yurk manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Lukyanov's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Yurk shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Lukyanov but Lukyanov pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Lukyanov is pushing Yurk up against the cage, for a bit of lean and pray action. Action being used the in the loosest possible sense of the word.

The crowd are getting on Lukyanov's back here. They're not happy about his lack of aggression in the clinch.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Yurk controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Lukyanov has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Lukyanov doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.

Yurk is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Lukyanov's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Lukyanov's back!

That was a close second round but I would say that Maykol Yurk will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!

Yurk throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Lukyanov's waist but Lukyanov gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Yurk off to one side.

Yurk changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Lukyanov tries to avoid it but Yurk manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Lukyanov to the ground. Lukyanov escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Lukyanov closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Lukyanov lands in his opponent's guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Lukyanov stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Yurk swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Yurk has a closed guard, preventing Lukyanov from standing up.
Lukyanov really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Yurk. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Lukyanov is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Yurk is trying to keep Lukyanov in close.
Lukyanov would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Yurk can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Lukyanov controls the pace.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Lukyanov fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Yurk avoids it really well and circles away.
Lukyanov avoids the clinch attempt nicely.

Yurk shoots for a double leg takedown but Lukyanov sprawls well. He's pushed Yurk's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Maykol Yurk is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Lukyanov closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Yurk's guard.

Yurk working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Lukyanov doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Oh but Yurk is tightening it up a little... Lukyanov has to be careful here... He's got his foot tucked under now, this looks tight! Lukyanov reacted too slowly and this one could be over in a matter of seconds! YES! Lukyanov taps out! Nice BJJ there by Yurk!
