PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Pasha Mista (ranked 7047 p4p, 582 weight class) and Zhasulan Boranbayev (ranked 4056 p4p, 420 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Mista might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to Gopnik Dance. Zhasulan Boranbayev is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Pasha Mista!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 10 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Zhasulan Boranbayev!
The judges for this bout are Konstantin Menshow, Aleksei Zolotukhin and Fedor Mirinova.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mista fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Boranbayev has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.
Mista lands the left hand.
Mista avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Boranbayev fails in his attempt to clinch.
Mista fakes a jab and scores with a low kick.
Mista throws a lazy body kick

and Boranbayev counters with a single leg into guard. Mista didn't expect that.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Boranbayev controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Mista wants to stand up but Boranbayev is controlling him.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Mista is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Mista lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Mista is in close to Boranbayev's body, working some short punches and elbows.
Mista is working Boranbayev over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.

Mista is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
Mista lands a couple of elbows.
Mista scores with a decent looking elbow strike.

Mista really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Boranbayev throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Mista escapes and throws Boranbayev's legs to the side, diving into side control!

Mista tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Mista has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Boranbayev takes a nasty elbow to the side of the head.

Boranbayev is looking for a sweep.

Mista is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Boranbayev has escaped the position, nice work there.
Mista has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Boranbayev is not content to let Mista control the position.
Mista creates a bit of distance and throws down some hard shots.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Boranbayev is trying to stand back up but Mista is controlling him
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Pasha Mista dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Boranbayev checks a low kick from Mista.
Mista is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Boranbayev can do to turn this around?
Mista lands with a slapping head kick.

and he gets countered with a snapping leg kick.
Pasha Mista seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Boranbayev is looking to clinch.
Mista feinted with a counter takedown.
Mista throws a head kick but Boranbayev moves out of range.
Boranbayev avoids the head kick by Mista.
Boranbayev looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Mista is fending him off so far but Boranbayev persists. Nope, Mista circles away and we're back to standing.

Boranbayev seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.

Mista manages to get to full guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Boranbayev throws a big right hand that misses.

Mista looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio.
Boranbayev slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Let's hope that Boranbayev has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

Boranbayev really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Mista. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Mista moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Boranbayev throws a big elbow that misses.
Boranbayev is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Boranbayev throws a big right hand that misses.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Boranbayev darts in looking for a takedown but Mista gets double underhooks and turns Boranbayev into the cage.

Zhasulan Boranbayev showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!


Boranbayev leaves Mista with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Despite the aggression on Boranbayev's face he doesn't fully commit to the counter.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Mista connects with a leg kick. He turned his hip over nicely there.

Boranbayev is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Mista's half guard.

Boranbayev is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.
Boranbayev looking to punish the body of his opponent here but Mista is avoiding damage well.

Mista is not content to let Boranbayev control the position.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Zhasulan Boranbayev comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Boranbayev has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
