PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Claudio Gadelha (ranked 5387 p4p, 202 weight class) and Rafael Mendes (ranked 3896 p4p, 154 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Claudio Gadelha!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Rafael Mendes!
The judges for this bout are Roosa Järviläinen, Marco Blurström and Anni Minnemäki.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gadelha darts in looking for a takedown but Mendes gets double underhooks and turns Gadelha into the cage.
Mendes tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away.
Gadelha shoots in looking for a takedown but Mendes manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Gadelha's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Gadelha has a takedown stuffed.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Claudio Gadelha. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Gadelha closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Gadelha is looking to stall here but Mendes recovers full guard.
Gadelha might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Mendes is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Gadelha stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Mendes swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Gadelha wants to control from the top but Mendes keeps moving.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Mendes forces Gadelha back against the cage and clinches.

Mendes has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Gadelha is trying to keep an underhook but Mendes manages to get the takedown into half guard.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Gadelha tries to roll over but Mendes keeps him under control.
Gadelha is staying active underneath Mendes, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Gadelha wants to improve his position but Mendes is controlling well.
Gadelha is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Mendes's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Mendes's back!

Mendes defends a prolonged rear naked choke attempt and turns nicely into his opponent's guard.
Mendes seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

Gadelha is trying to control Mendes's posture but Mendes avoids it.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Gadelha tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Mendes swivels and escapes.
And Mendes tries to counter it with a takedown but Gadelha pushes his down on his head and steps out.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Gadelha enables Mendes to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Gadelha manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Gadelha is looking for a triangle here but Mendes uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.

Gadelha can't do much from the bottom here.

Mendes is looking to take a break and control but Gadelha is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Gadelha escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Mendes gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Mendes wants to pass the guard but Gadelha is keeping the position.

Mendes has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Mendes tries to free his leg and advance position but Gadelha is retaining full guard.

Gadelha is trying to control the action in half guard but Mendes is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Gadelha is trying hard to land a takedown here. Mendes sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!



Mendes darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Mendes prevents Gadelha from improving his position.
In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Mendes working his ground and pound in the gym. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though.
Gadelha is looking to control Mendes's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Gadelha avoid being mounted?

Mendes has hold of the far side arm. He's working for the Kimura, can Gadelha defend it? Mendes steps over the head and cranks it - Gadelha is tapping out! That was textbook stuff right there - nice submission victory for Mendes!

A relieved looking Rafael Mendes thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it.
