PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Zachariah Nichols (ranked 24745 p4p, 0 weight class) and Johnny Pinto (ranked 5715 p4p, 0 weight class). I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of New York, Zachariah Nichols!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Johnny Pinto!
The judges for this bout are John Roberts, Anthony Taglia and David Schapiro.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Pinto shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Pinto showed some decent athleticism there.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Pinto looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
Pinto is trying to control. Nichols wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Nichols might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Nichols has hold of Pinto's hands but Pinto slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.


It looks like Zachariah Nichols has been cut.
Pinto has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Pinto trying to control the action but Nichols is working from the bottom.
Pinto passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Nichols!
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Pinto trying to control but Nichols is having none of it.

Pinto is standing up out of mount! Strange tactic there - he must really want this one on the feet!

Pinto gets in close and instigates a clinch.

Nichols escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Pinto drives through with a takedown into guard.

Pinto has gone for a leg lock! Nichols slips out almost immediately though and dives into Pinto's guard.

Pinto is trying to control the position from the bottom.

Nichols connects with a couple of short punches.
Pinto controls Nichols momentarily but Nichols frees himself.
Nichols has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Pinto is proving hard to escape from.
Nichols has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Pinto looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

Pinto pushes Nichols off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.

Pinto throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Nichols was covering up waiting for the punch and Pinto finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Nichols really is a fat lump.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Pinto drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Nichols manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Pinto has Nichols in his guard.

Pinto seems keen to control Nichols's posture.

Pinto has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Nichols is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Pinto.
Pinto can't do much from the bottom here.

Pinto tries to buck Nichols off but Nichols is having none of it.
Pinto wants to control but Nichols postures up.
Pinto takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better.
Pinto is looking for a sweep.
Pinto tries to control but Nichols manages to take his back.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.



Pinto rushes Nichols and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

Nichols pulls guard successfully.
Pinto's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Pinto won't allow Nichols to sweep him here.
Pinto has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Pinto is stalling in the full guard.
Pinto trying to control the position from guard on top but Nichols is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Pinto distracts Nichols with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.

Pinto stands up over Nichols, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.

Nichols working for a triangle but Pinto defends it easily.

Pinto stands up from Nichols's guard - Pinto perhaps looking for a knockout.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Pinto shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Pinto showed some decent athleticism there.
Pinto trying to mount his opponent but Nichols defends it.
Pinto with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.

Pinto looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Nichols with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Pinto not landing any meaningful shots this time.
The step up in weight doesn't seem to be a problem for Pinto. He's performing admirably here against the bigger man.
Pinto is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
Pinto lands with a punch from half guard.
Pinto wants to lay and pray for a moment but Nichols keeps working.
Pinto is thwarting Nichols's attempts to control the position.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Nichols avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Pinto.
Pinto looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
Nichols is looking to control Pinto's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Nichols avoid being mounted?

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Nichols shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Nichols was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Johnny Pinto showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!



Pinto gets the takedown into side control.
Pinto is working Nichols over with some ground and pound from side control.

Pinto decides to take the fight back to the feet.
A nice inside leg kick there by Pinto. That's going to slow Nichols down.

Pinto dives in and scores a takedown into Nichols's guard.
Pinto pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Nichols is keeping the position for now.
Pinto is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

Pinto cracks Nichols with a solid left hand.
Johnny Pinto has got the better of the ground game so far.
Pinto trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Nichols controls Pinto momentarily but Pinto frees himself.
Nichols manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Pinto manages to get himself to full guard.

Nichols won't allow Pinto to sweep him here.
Pinto is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
Pinto is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Pinto manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Nichols manages to get himself to full guard.

Pinto wants to stand but Nichols is controlling his posture from full guard.
Pinto controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

Nichols has his foot on Pinto's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Pinto works his way back into a safe position though.

Pinto cracks Nichols with a solid left hand.
Pinto stays in close to Nichols's body and controls the position.
Pinto slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Nichols being controlled for a moment.
Nichols is not in a great position here, taking some shots.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Pinto tries for a kimura but Nichols is defending well.
Nichols tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Zachariah Nichols has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Johnny Pinto is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Johnny Pinto comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Pinto has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
