PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Kenton Gaines (ranked 25174 p4p, 0 weight class) and Carpal Syndrome (ranked 5627 p4p, 391 weight class). On his way into the cage it seems that Kenton Gaines has been attacked by a crazed fan! It looks like it might have been the just bleed guy! Luckily Kenton Gaines seems to be OK! I thought that lunatic was in prison!?

Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Kenton Gaines!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Carpal Syndrome!
The judges for this bout are Tarja Halkonen, Marco Blurström and Johanna Lukiainen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Gaines is trying to break the clinch but Syndrome has him pressed against the cage.

Syndrome manages to break the clinch.
Syndrome fails with a takedown attempt.

Gaines closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Gaines lands in his opponent's guard.

Syndrome is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Syndrome trying to keep a closed guard but Gaines is proving a slippery customer.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Gaines wants to get up but he can't break Syndrome's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Syndrome working for submissions but it's allowed Gaines to get to half guard.
Syndrome is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Gaines decides to stand up and try his luck on the feet.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Syndrome fails with the takedown.
Gaines changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.
Syndrome fails to land the takedown.
Kenton Gaines has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Carpal Syndrome.
Syndrome throws a quick inside leg kick.
Syndrome tries to clinch but Gaines moves out of range.
Gaines half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range.
Gaines throws a head kick but Syndrome moves out of range.
Syndrome shoots for a double leg takedown but Gaines sprawls well. He's pushed Syndrome's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Syndrome checks a low kick from Gaines.

Syndrome goes for a double leg but Gaines avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Gaines continues to drive forward.
Syndrome looks winded!

Gaines bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Syndrome tries to wriggle free to get back to his feet but he's given up his back! Oops.

Gaines has his hand under the chin of his opponent looking for the choke. He's nearly got it! This one could be all over! But no, Syndrome has freed his hand and lives to survive another… well, another couple of seconds at least!

You can see the frustration on Syndrome's face… He knows he is in trouble unless he improves his position sooner rather than later.

Syndrome is displaying good submission defense - not really looking in danger of submitting to the rear naked choke at the moment. That could change in an instant of course if Gaines gets his way!

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.



Gaines feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Syndrome has managed to wall walk up one of the corner posts to get back to his feet. Gaines is pushing him up against the cage, looking to control the position.

Gaines gets control of Syndrome's arms and successfully pulls guard. Gaines will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Gaines has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Syndrome can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Syndrome wants to control from the top but Gaines keeps moving.

Gaines has his foot on Syndrome's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Syndrome works his way back into a safe position though.

Gaines tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Gaines throws a couple of weedy looking strikes off his back.
Syndrome must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Gaines had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Syndrome defends it easily.
Syndrome tries to free his leg and advance position but Gaines is retaining full guard.

Syndrome stands up and waves to Gaines to follow him.
Gaines really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Syndrome will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Gaines shoots in for a double leg but Syndrome sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Syndrome changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.

Gaines attempts a counter takedown but Syndrome avoids it well and moves away.

and Gaines counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

Syndrome has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Gaines avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Gaines is trying to push Syndrome away but Syndrome has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.

Syndrome lands a shoulder strike that jolts his opponent's head backwards.

Gaines tightens his grip and picks Syndrome up, before dumping him to the ground. Syndrome manages to land in guard.

Syndrome is working an open guard so Gaines takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Syndrome shoots in but no luck this time.
A little feinted left hand from Gaines on the counter but he doesn't commit to it.

Syndrome scrambles, trying to get to his feet, but Gaines manages to mount him!

The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Gaines avoids the attempt from Syndrome to control.
Gaines lands with some strikes.
Gaines pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.
Syndrome looking to escape from mount but he's given up his back!
Syndrome is really stuck here.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Kenton Gaines dominated that second round.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

Syndrome tries to slip a leg under to move to half guard but Gaines presses down on the leg and jumps into full mount!

Gaines goes for an armbar but Syndrome turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Syndrome.

Syndrome advances to half guard.
Syndrome passes into side control, despite Gaines's attempt to control the position.
Syndrome remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.
Gaines can't do much from the bottom here.
Gaines tries to get back to his feet but has found himself mounted instead. Damn, that's gotta suck.

Syndrome doesn't have the hooks in and Gaines manages to turn into his guard.
Gaines will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Syndrome takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Syndrome wants to sweep but no luck.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Syndrome wants to get back to his feet.
Gaines has the hooks in. Syndrome is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted.

Syndrome needs to remain patient if he's going to get out of this sticky situation.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Kenton Gaines.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Gaines, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
