PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between AC Slater (ranked 658 p4p, 104 weight class) and Neil Gilas (ranked 515 p4p, 76 weight class). Slater's entrance music is Stop What Ya Doin. A fine choice. Gilas is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Remember The Name - Fort Minor. AC Slater has a significant reach advantage - let's see if he can make it count.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 23 - 13 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, AC Slater!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 22 - 15 - 1, fighting out of Hilo, Neil Gilas!
The judges for this bout are Gregory Folan, Alec Ball and Dillan Fox.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A bone on bone clash there as Slater blocks the leg kick.
Slater was looking to counter that last move with a shot to the body but he didn't commit.
Gilas works Slater's body with a nice hook.
Gilas throws a leg kick but he was too far away and it doesn't land.
Gilas throws a hook but Slater avoids it easily.
Gilas throws a nice outside leg kick.
Slater blocks the body kick.
A quick step to the side and Slater tries to counter with a shot to the body but it doesn't connect.
Gilas connects with a solid leg kick.
Gilas throws a leg kick but Slater sees it coming and checks it nicely.
We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Gilas has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat.

and Slater counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Gilas is wriggling around but Slater manages to pass to half guard.

Slater will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Gilas is looking for a sweep. Slater is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Well, if Slater is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

Slater throws an elbow that misses. Gilas uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Slater's guard. Nice move by Gilas!

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Gilas accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Gilas looking to sit in guard and control but Slater gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Slater wants to control from the top but Gilas keeps moving.
Gilas has Slater pulled in close to control his posture.

Slater is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Gilas tries to land a sweep but no joy.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Slater is in close to Gilas's body, working some short punches and elbows.
Slater pushes down on Gilas's leg and manages to get into half guard.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Slater is keen to just control but Gilas is a slippery customer.

Gilas tries to get to full guard but Slater has control of the leg.
Slater lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Gilas is positioning himself well to prevent Slater advancing to mount.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that AC Slater will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Gilas moves into range and lands a nice leg kick.
Slater looks to land a right hand but Gilas moved out of range.
Slater takes a thudding leg kick, right into the meat of the thigh.
AC Slater is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Slater drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Gilas is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
AC Slater overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Gilas is on top in guard.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!


A jab lands there for Gilas.
Slater falls off balance throwing a combination
enabling Gilas to counter with a crisp jab.
Gilas connects with a lovely jab that went straight through the gap between Slater's hands.
Gilas lands with a nice low kick. That'll leave a bruise.
Slater swinging wildly here.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
That's a knee to de groin and it's over and out! Slater crumples to the ground after an illegal strike from Gilas - the referee stops the clock and Slater gets 5 minutes to recover from that one. "I'm sorry" says Gilas. Slater manages to get back to his feet and the fight resumes.

Gilas drives through with a takedown into Slater's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.

Slater is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Slater is scooting his butt against the cage and has managed to get back to his feet. Gilas presses him back against the cage, presumably looking to take the fight back to the mat.

The referee calls for Gilas to work.
Gilas tried to land a shot to the body but connects with Slater's elbow.
Slater is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Gilas is defending well.

Both guys are working to get underhooks.
Gilas swings away with an uppercut that misses.
Gilas has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Slater avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.

Neil Gilas has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Gilas pushes Slater off looking to stand but Slater dives back in and keeps control.
Gilas on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound.
Slater thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Slater is trying to control the action in half guard but Gilas is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Slater winds up and cracks Gilas with a swinging punch to the side of the head.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Neil Gilas comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Slater has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
