PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Land Shark (ranked 6941 p4p, 583 weight class) and Trenton Grechov (ranked 6208 p4p, 551 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

The judges for this bout are Jonathan Paton, Russell Pearce and John Kavanagh.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Grechov tries to clinch but Shark is having none of it.
Shark seem to be loading up, looking for a big counter.
Grechov tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Shark defends well and Grechov ends up having to push Shark into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
Shark tries to counter by clinching up but Grechov breaks away and moves out of range.

Shark shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Shark controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Shark pushes down on Grechov's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Shark is taking a breather. Grechov says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Shark's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Grechov is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Shark is staying tight to Grechov's torso, preventing him from escaping.
Shark has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Grechov wants to control but Shark postures up.
Shark tries to advance to mount but can't.

Shark seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
This is a sustained period of stalling by Shark.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Grechov misses with a takedown attempt - Shark sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

Shark closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Shark lands in his opponent's guard.

Shark throws a big elbow that misses.
Grechov bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Shark's guard.

Shark pulls Grechov in close to his closed guard and prevents Grechov from doing any damage or advancing position.
Shark might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Shark is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

and Shark counters with a nice double leg into side control. Grechov won't be happy with that.

Grechov is displaying good submission defense - not really looking in danger of submitting to the rear naked choke at the moment. That could change in an instant of course if Shark gets his way!

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Grechov quickly switches to an armbar and extends the arm! Shark has no choice but to tap, to a very quick submission! Wow, that was lightning fast! Grechov celebrates on the cage, with the crowd.
