PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Weird Eric (ranked 5895 p4p, 215 weight class) and The Hippo (ranked 5652 p4p, 205 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Eric might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to Every You, Every Me. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Weird Eric!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, The Hippo!
The judges for this bout are Roger Salmon, Chris Saunders and Josh West.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Hippo gets the takedown into side control.
Eric is trying to escape the position but Hippo is controlling the position.
Hippo scores with a couple of short elbows.
Eric has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Eric takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Eric is letting Hippo control him for a moment.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Let's hope that Hippo has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
Eric is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Hippo asserts his dominance and retains side control.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Eric is trying to get back to half guard.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Weird Eric is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Hippo misses with a takedown
and Eric counters with a stiff right hand.
Hippo looks for a takedown but Eric sprawls well.
Hippo has his takedown stuffed
and Eric makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.
Weird Eric has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of The Hippo.

Eric takes the fight into the clinch.
Hippo blocks a couple of punches on the inside.

Eric lands a hook to the side of the head.

Hippo has hold of one of Eric's legs. Eric is fighting the takedown attempt but Hippo gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.
Eric is looking to stand back up but Hippo counters by passing into half guard. Oops... bit sloppy there by Eric.

Eric wants to get back to his feet.
Still in half guard, Hippo seems content to control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Eric wants to control but Hippo is keeping busy.
Hippo throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Hippo is taking a breather. Eric says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Eric tries to roll over but Hippo keeps him under control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Weird Eric will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!



Hippo fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Eric sprawls well initially but Hippo persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Eric keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.

Eric wants to control but Hippo is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Hippo takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
We're seeing a lot of stalling here from Hippo.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
No luck for Hippo with that takedown attempt.
An attempted straight right counter from Eric misses the target.
Hippo will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Eric keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Weird Eric has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of The Hippo.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Hippo fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Eric, pushing him back against the cage.

Eric breaks from the clinch.

Hippo closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Eric did well to prevent Hippo getting side control.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Eric is trying to control Hippo's posture but Hippo avoids it.
Hippo has control of an arm but Eric manages to advance to Hippo's back!
Hippo rolls and manages to get back to half guard. Nicely done.

Hippo is pressing down on Eric's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.

Hippo is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Hippo wants to stand and escape but Eric is having none of it.
Eric might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Hippo seems keen to control Eric's posture.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Hippo fails with a takedown attempt.

Hippo dives in and scores a takedown into Eric's guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Weird Eric will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!

Hippo shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Eric pinned against the cage. Eric gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

and Eric counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.

Hippo shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Eric counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Hippo gets cracked there but stands up to it.
Hippo circles away from the clinch attempt.
Eric is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Hippo can do to turn this around?
Eric stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Eric wants it to stay on the feet.
It looked like Eric wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit.
Hippo swats away the attempt to clinch by Eric.
Eric misses with a body shot.
Hippo drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Eric defends it well.
Hippo avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Eric keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Eric swung with a counter right hand that didn't connect.
Weird Eric is winning the standup battle so far.

Eric pushes Hippo up against the cage in a clinch.
Eric lands a hook to the side of the head.
Eric presses Hippo against the cage and delivers a mid-strength body shot.

A short right hand to the side of the head by Eric.

Eric breaks the clinch.
Hippo with a poor takedown
and Hippo takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Eric lands with a right hand.
Eric could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Hippo tries for a takedown but Eric circles away easily
and Eric counters with a nice uppercut.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Eric lands an overhand right.
The Hippo seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Hippo closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Eric's guard.

Eric is scooting his butt against the cage and has managed to get back to his feet. Hippo presses him back against the cage, presumably looking to take the fight back to the mat.

Eric escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Hippo shoots for a double leg takedown but Eric sprawls well. He's pushed Hippo's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Eric closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.

Eric breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Eric slaps away a takedown attempt from Hippo, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Eric cracks Hippo with a good jab.
Eric is really head hunting here, hardly looking to strike to the body at all.
Hippo shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Eric counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Hippo keeps the fight on the outside.
Eric throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Hippo misses with a jab to the body
and Eric counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Hippo looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Eric is fending him off so far but Hippo persists. Nope, Eric circles away and we're back to standing.
Hippo shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Eric sprawls well. Eric wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Hippo gets slowly back to his feet.

Hippo takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.

Hippo closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Eric quickly recovers to half guard.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Eric is trying to stand back up but Hippo is controlling him
The Hippo has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Hippo seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

Weird Eric showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Eric, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
