PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Matt Quin (ranked 281 p4p, 42 weight class) and Eric Staal (ranked 529 p4p, 78 weight class). Quin's ring entrance music is that housewives' favourite, Captain Jack - Iko Iko. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 36 - 18 - 3, fighting out of Las Vegas, Matt Quin!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 24 - 10 - 1, fighting out of New York, Eric Staal!
The judges for this bout are Don Winkell, Jack Bonds and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Quin looks to throw the jab but Staal is out of range.
Quin throws a looping overhand right but Staal ducks down to avoid it.
Staal lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.
A slow jab from Quin misses its intended target.
Quin lunges at Staal with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by Staal's hand.
Staal throws a looping overhand right but Quin ducks down to avoid it.
Staal takes a body punch but keeps moving.
Staal takes a jab right on the kisser.
Quin waving his hands out in front of him, looking to distract Staal.
Quin takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away.

Quin changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.

and Staal counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Staal throws a body kick but he was well out of range there.
Staal lands with a nice low kick. That'll leave a bruise.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Quin throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Staal sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Quin avoids a low kick by using good footwork.

and Staal takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Quin shoots in looking for a takedown but Staal manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Quin's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

Staal tried to score with a low kick but Quin checks it.
We've been hearing reports that Quin has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight.
Quin shoots in looking for a takedown. Staal tries to sprawl out of it but Quin keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Staal manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Staal let fly with a counter punch to the body but it didn't land.
Staal fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Quin looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.
Quin loads up on a big right hand but Staal slips the punch.
Quin ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Quin was looking to counter that move with a punch but didn't quite pull the trigger.

Staal's corner calls for a 1-2. Staal obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Quin lands a beauty of a right hand that gets the crowd cheering.

Staal throws out a counter right but Quin avoids it with no problem.

Quin fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Staal sprawls well initially but Quin persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Quin looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Quin is taking a breather. Staal says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Staal is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Staal is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Quin's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Quin's back!
Staal cracks Quin with a big shot to body and one to the head - really punishing Quin from the back mount here, looking to soften him up.

Quin is really stuck here.
Staal doesn't have the hooks in and Quin manages to turn into his guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Staal tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Quin stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Staal swivels though and keeps the full guard.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Matt Quin will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Staal throws a half hearted mid kick.
The fighters are starting to get sweaty, which will make takedowns a bit more tricky.
Quin lands a nice hook to Staal's body. Staal takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.
Staal uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Quin.

Staal tries to land a front kick but Quin steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.

Quin tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Quin has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Eric Staal showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! And we move into the final round!

Quin lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.

Staal will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

Quin has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Staal finds it's way round the side to connect with Quin's head.

Staal postures up in Quin's guard and throws a big left but Quin blocks it.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Quin is looking for a triangle here but Staal uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.
A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Staal fails to land a wild elbow strike.
Staal lands a knee to the body and a forearm to the face.
Quin is trying to control Staal's posture but Staal avoids it.
Staal takes a little break here. Quin wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.
Quin tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Quin looking for a sweep but Staal has passed into full mount! Oh no!
Staal looking to ground and pound his opponent to a finish here.

And that's the end of the fight!
Eric Staal comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Staal has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
